Oracle releases MySQL migration tools for SQL Server, Windows users

Oracle is making a big push to convert Microsoft SQL Server users to mySQL.

The Redwood Shores, Calif. database giant has released a new set of migration tools to ease the process of moving to the Windows-based open source database.

The migration tools, which were announced July 25 and will be showcased at MySQL Connect in late September, allows users to more easily migrate data from Microsoft SQL Server to Oracle's MySQL.

"The new migration tool is integrated into MySQL Workbench, which allows the visual design, development and administration of MySQL databases, and now provides a complete solution for migrating Microsoft SQL Server database tables and data to MySQL with less time and effort," Oracle announced in a press release. "With MySQL Workbench, SQL Server developers and DBAs can quickly and easily convert existing applications to run MySQL on Windows as well as Linux and other platforms."

As it continues to refine its forthcoming MySQL 5.6 with Windows improvements, Oracle also recently announced a MySQL for Excel plug-in that allows users to acccess and edit MySQL data from within Excel as well as an enhanced version of the MySQL Installer for Windows and new MySQL Notifier application that that allows Windows-based users to more easily monitor, start and stop MySQL instances with a Microsoft SQL Server look and feel, the company said.

"Addressing the growing demand from business analysts using MySQL for data marts and analytic applications, the new MySQL for Excel application plug-in allows users to easily import, export and manipulate MySQL data, Oracle noted in a statement issued July 26. "Enabling users in most cases to go from download to development in three minutes or less, the enhanced MySQL installer provides point-and-click configuration of new MySQL database instances, as well as advanced logging and security features."

?

?

Oracle claims customers can reduce total cost of ownership by as much as 90 percent by switching from Microsoft SQL Server 2012 to MySQL.

Friend: Md. man held in shooting plot gentle giant

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A friend says a Maryland man accused of threatening to shoot up his workplace is a "gentle giant" who collected weapons and had expressed concerns about break-ins near his apartment complex.

Mike Cochran tells The Associated Press on Saturday that he thinks his friend, Neil E. Prescott, did not intend for his comments to be taken seriously. Cochran says Prescott was known for having a sarcastic sense of humor.

Police say Prescott, who was in the process of being fired, told a supervisor this week that he was a "joker" and was going to load his guns and "blow everybody up." Prescott was taken into custody for an emergency psychiatric evaluation and has not been charged.

Cochran says Prescott was "no stranger to sarcasm regardless of political correctness."

US sees Israel, tight Mideast ally, as spy threat

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The CIA station chief opened the locked box containing the sensitive equipment he used from his home in Tel Aviv, Israel, to communicate with CIA headquarters in Virginia, only to find that someone had tampered with it. He sent word to his superiors about the break-in.

The incident, described by three former senior U.S. intelligence officials, might have been dismissed as just another cloak-and-dagger incident in the world of international espionage, except that the same thing had happened to the previous station chief in Israel.

It was a not-so-subtle reminder that, even in a country friendly to the United States, the CIA was itself being watched.

In a separate episode, according to another two former U.S. officials, a CIA officer in Israel came home to find the food in the refrigerator had been rearranged. In all the cases, the U.S. government believes Israel's security services were responsible.

Such meddling underscores what is widely known but rarely discussed outside intelligence circles: Despite inarguable ties between the U.S. and its closest ally in the Middle East and despite statements from U.S. politicians trumpeting the friendship, U.S. national security officials consider Israel to be, at times, a frustrating ally and a genuine counterintelligence threat.

In addition to what the former U.S. officials described as intrusions in homes in the past decade, Israel has been implicated in U.S. criminal espionage cases and disciplinary proceedings against CIA officers and blamed in the presumed death of an important spy in Syria for the CIA during the administration of President George W. Bush.

The CIA considers Israel its No. 1 counterintelligence threat in the agency's Near East Division, the group that oversees spying across the Middle East, according to current and former officials. Counterintelligence is the art of protecting national secrets from spies. This means the CIA believes that U.S. national secrets are safer from other Middle Eastern governments than from Israel.

Israel employs highly sophisticated, professional spy services that rival American agencies in technical capability and recruiting human sources. Unlike Iran or Syria, for example, Israel as a steadfast U.S. ally enjoys access to the highest levels of the U.S. government in military and intelligence circles.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to talk publicly about the sensitive intelligence and diplomatic issues between the two countries.

The counterintelligence worries continue even as the U.S. relationship with Israel features close cooperation on intelligence programs that reportedly included the Stuxnet computer virus that attacked computers in Iran's main nuclear enrichment facilities. While the alliance is central to the U.S. approach in the Middle East, there is room for intense disagreement, especially in the diplomatic turmoil over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"It's a complicated a relationship," said Joseph Wippl, a former senior CIA clandestine officer and head of the agency's office of congressional affairs. "They have their interests. We have our interests. For the U.S., it's a balancing act."

The way Washington characterizes its relationship with Israel is also important to the way the U.S. is regarded by the rest of the world, particularly Muslim countries.

U.S. political praise has reached a crescendo ahead of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's scheduled meeting Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. Their relationship spans decades, since their brief overlap in the 1970s at the Boston Consulting Group. Both worked as advisers for the firm early in their careers before Romney co-founded his own private-equity firm. Romney said in a speech this past week that Israel was "one of our fondest friends," and he criticized Obama for what he called the administration's "shabby treatment" of the Jewish state.

"The people of Israel deserve better than what they've received from the leader of the free world," Romney said in a plain appeal to U.S. Jewish and pro-Israel evangelical voters.

Obama, who last year was overheard appearing to endorse criticism of Netanyahu from then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy, has defended his work with Israel. "We've gotten a lot of business done with Israel over the last three years," Obama said this year. "I think the prime minister ? and certainly the defense minister ? would acknowledge that we've never had closer military and intelligence cooperation."

An Israeli spokesman in Washington, Lior Weintraub, said his country has close ties with the U.S.

"Israel's intelligence and security agencies maintain close, broad and continuous cooperation with their U.S. counterparts," Weintraub said. "They are our partners in confronting many mutual challenges. Any suggestion otherwise is baseless and contrary to the spirit and practice of the security cooperation between our two countries."

The CIA declined comment.

The tension exists on both sides.

The National Security Agency historically has kept tabs on Israel. The U.S., for instance, does not want to be caught off guard if Israel launches a surprise attack that could plunge the region into war and jeopardize oil supplies, putting American soldiers at risk.

Matthew Aid, the author of "The Secret Sentry," about the NSA, said the U.S. started spying on Israel even before the state was created in 1948. Aid said the U.S. had a station on Cyprus dedicated to spying on Israel until 1974. Today, teams of Hebrew linguists are stationed at Fort Meade, Md., at the NSA, listening to intercepts of Israeli communications, he said.

CIA policy generally forbids its officers in Tel Aviv from recruiting Israeli government sources, officials said. To do so would require approval from senior CIA leaders, two former senior officials said. During the Bush administration, the approval had to come from the White House.

Israel is not America's closest ally, at least when it comes to whom Washington trusts with the most sensitive national security information. That distinction belongs to a group of nations known informally as the "Five Eyes." Under that umbrella, the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand agree to share intelligence and not to spy on one another. Often, U.S. intelligence officers work directly alongside counterparts from these countries to handle highly classified information not shared with anyone else.

Israel is part of by a second-tier relationship known by another informal name, "Friends on Friends." It comes from the phrase "Friends don't spy on friends," and the arrangement dates back decades. But Israel's foreign intelligence service, the Mossad, and its FBI equivalent, the Shin Bet, both considered among the best in the world, have been suspected of recruiting U.S. officials and trying to steal American secrets.

Around 2004 or 2005, the CIA fired two female officers for having unreported contact with Israelis. One of the women acknowledged during a polygraph exam that she had been in a relationship with an Israeli who worked in the Foreign Ministry, a former U.S. official said. The CIA learned the Israeli introduced the woman to his "uncle." That person worked for Shin Bet.

Jonathan Pollard, who worked for the Navy as a civilian intelligence analyst, was convicted of spying for Israel in 1987 when the Friends on Friends agreement was in effect. He was sentenced to life in prison. The Israelis for years have tried to win his release. In January 2011, Netanyahu asked Obama to free Pollard and acknowledged that Israel's actions in the case were "wrong and wholly unacceptable."

Ronald Olive, a former senior supervisor with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service who investigated Pollard, said that after the arrest, the U.S. formed a task force to determine what government records Pollard had taken. Olive said Israel turned over so few that it represented "a speck in the sand."

In the wake of Pollard, the Israelis promised not to operate intelligence agents on U.S. soil.

A former Army mechanical engineer, Ben-Ami Kadish, pleaded guilty in 2008 to passing classified secrets to the Israelis during the 1980s. His case officer was the same one who handled Pollard. Kadish let the Israelis photograph documents about nuclear weapons, a modified version of an F-15 fighter jet and the U.S. Patriot missile air defense system. Kadish, who was 85 years old when he was arrested, avoided prison and was ordered to pay a $50,000 fine. He told the judge that, "I thought I was helping the state of Israel without harming the United States."

In 2006, a former Defense Department analyst was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for giving classified information to an Israeli diplomat and two pro-Israel lobbyists.

Despite the Pollard case and others, Olive said he believes the two countries need to maintain close ties "but do we still have to be vigilant? Absolutely. The Israelis are good at what they do."

During the Bush administration, the CIA ranked some of the world's intelligence agencies in order of their willingness to help in the U.S.-led fight against terrorism. One former U.S. intelligence official who saw the completed list said Israel, which hadn't been directly targeted in attacks by al-Qaida, fell below Libya, which recently had agreed to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

The espionage incidents have done little to slow the billions of dollars in money and weapons from the United States to Israel. Since Pollard's arrest, Israel has received more than $60 billion in U.S. aid, mostly in the form of military assistance, according to the Congressional Research Service. The U.S. has supplied Israel with Patriot missiles, helped pay for an anti-missile defense program and provided sensitive radar equipment to track Iranian missile threats.

Just on Friday, Obama said he was releasing an additional $70 million in military aid, a previously announced move that appeared timed to upstage Romney's trip, and he spoke of America's "unshakable commitment to Israel." The money will go to help Israel expand production of a short-range rocket defense system.

Some CIA officials still bristle over the disappearance of a Syrian scientist who during the Bush administration was the CIA's only spy inside Syria's military program to develop chemical and biological weapons. The scientist was providing the agency with extraordinary information about pathogens used in the program, former U.S. officials said about the previously unknown intelligence operation.

At the time, there was pressure to share information about weapons of mass destruction, and the CIA provided its intelligence to Israel. A former official with direct knowledge of the case said details about Syria's program were published in the media. Although the CIA never formally concluded that Israel was responsible, CIA officials complained to Israel about their belief that Israelis were leaking the information to pressure Syria to abandon the program. The Syrians pieced together who had access to the sensitive information and eventually identified the scientist as a traitor.

Before he disappeared and was presumed killed, the scientist told his CIA handler that Syrian Military Intelligence was focusing on him.

ETF Trading And Investing Strategies | Penny Stocks

ETF Trading And Investing Strategies For Traders

ETF Trading And Investing StrategiesETF trading and investing strategies for trading and investing in Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) vary considerably depending upon trading and investment goals and risk tolerance. ?ETF trading and investing strategies can be utilized to enhance the probability of making money trading and investing in ETFs and to limit risk to appropriate levels.?

ETFs have opened a number of trading options and strategies for targeted trading that previously did not exist.? If a trader believes a country, stock sector, commodity, currency, or market volatility is undervalued or overvalued and presents a near term trading opportunity, ETFs can be utilized to either go long or short in the area the trader would like to target.? In many cases, long and short leveraged ETFs that are designed to move at 200% or 300% are available, and can be utilized by traders trying to maximize their ETF trading profits from an anticipated move.

The fact that ETFs trade in the same manner as stocks allows stock trading strategies to be applied to ETF trading.? These include but are not limited to:? limit orders to buy or sell ETFs at specific prices, stop limit orders to buy or sell ETFs once specified price limits have been reached, and short sale orders to short ETFs that a trader anticipates will soon fall in price.?

The ability to trade leveraged ETFs and employ stock trading strategies when trading ETFs allows traders to maximize their profit potential when trading ETFs, while also minimizing risk by employing trading capital protection strategies when trading ETFs.

ETF Trading And Investing Strategies For Investors

ETF trading and investing strategies are in some cases similar and in some cases considerably different.? The reason for the differences are twofold: ?some ETFs perform quite differently over a short time-span (trading) than over a long time-span (investing) and investing goals are often different than trading goals.

The trading strategies associated with ETF investing focus upon investing in ETFs for the long haul to participate in the anticipated long term appreciation in the price of ETFs and collect dividend payments, if applicable.? The primary ETF investing strategy is to do the proper research into an ETF one is considering investing in, including reading the ETF?s prospectus, to ensure that the ETF is designed to appreciate in price over the long term, as long as the underlying assets appreciate in price.? This is not always the case with ETFs.? Leveraged ETFs and ETFs that invest in futures contracts are not suitable for ETF investing because they tend to track their underlying assets poorly over long periods of time, which could lead to significant investment underperformance or losses, even if the underlying assets perform well.

ETF trading and investing strategies have one thing in common, they are designed to make money by buying and at some point selling ETFs.? The specific ETF trading and investing strategies employed depend upon the investment time horizon and risk mitigation considerations.

Spiritual Diet - The Jon Gabriel Approach | MindBodySpirit.me

Spiritual Based Diet

spiritual weight lossThe Spiritual Diet is begins with the solid foundation of Mind Body and Spirit and how they all directly influence each other. If you?re looking for permanent weight or fat loss, then this is the best overall approach, period. It works so well because it allows you to see what?s been stopping you, and removes that resistance leading to easy weight loss. It?s the key factor that most diets miss. They try and remove the weight by calorie counting, intense exercise and cutting out all your carbohydrates. This is not sustainable or sensible when you look at the big picture.

?

They work on the effect (excess weight) and ignore what?s causing the excess fat to be locked away in your body. Once you realize what?s been causing your body to respond in this way, your body will return to it?s normal healthy state. It begins with your body being in a state of ease from the spiritual level, to the mental and finally down to your body?s fat cells. Stress is the main cause of weight staying on.

?

Stress creates a chain reaction of elevated insulin (a fat STORAGE hormone), lowers your blood sugar so you?re hungry, and creates an acidic and disease prone state in your body known as chronic inflammation. Once you address this cause, you can then begin adding the right combination of foods, at the right time for permanent and easy fat loss. The Jon Gabriel Approach is spiritually based and works from the inside out for the best results you?ve ever experienced.

?

The Jon Gabriel Approach

Jon Gabriel was a man?s man at over 400 pounds, loud and boisterous on the outside, but dying a slow death of disease and loneliness on the inside. He read all the diet books on the shelf, and even had personal relationships with Dr. Atkins (of the Atkins diet) and Dr. Pritikin (from the Pritikin diet.) Even with that inside track with the ?experts? he was unable to lose much weight, lost his self-confidence, dignity and had no direction in his life.

?

Jon felt powerless over food and his weight. Fortunately (for him and us) he didn?t give up, but dug in his heels and studied alternative approaches to permanent fat loss. What he discovered will amaze you.

?

It?s not the Calories but your relationship to those Calories that matters

?

Watch this brief explanation as Jon Gabriel explains how your body is holding on to weight on purpose.

Visit the following page and: Get Free Gabriel Method DVD?s

?

He learned that by applying a few spiritual techniques, our body?s reaction to stress and calories could be brought into their proper relationship. This bypasses our body?s need to store calories as fat because of being in a state of chronic stress (survival mode). We can relax into a healthy relationship between our food and our mental state. Our blood sugar will remain normal, so no feeling hungry when we?re really just trying and calm our nerves.

?

Once this relaxed state is reached, we can then choose the best foods at the best times to give our body what it is really craving, for energy, a healthy immune system and rejuvenating tissue repair. It?s what they call a win/win situation. Our mind body and spirit is working together as a unified whole, and even our mood will stabilize. We all know that stress causes us to react unconsciously, rather than respond consciously, and we love the choices we make when we?re doing it from a relaxed state of being.

?

?

I have personally tried this approach, and can say that I was completely blown away. It is working for me. I got his DVD?s and then the Transformation Kit and I feel so much better. It is totally in line with what I teach, which is using the spiritual approach. I no longer eat the wrong snacks before bedtime and have already lost 10 pounds in the last 2 months. The 14-inch multimedia "mobile companion," announced just today, packs a 1,366 x 768 HD display, dedicated HM76 graphics chipset, choice of Intel's third-generation Core i processors and comes in a variety of storage configurations: 500 GB, 640GB or 720GB. Weighing in at 5.3 pounds (2.4kg) and measuring 13.8 x 9.2 x 1.3 inches (349.7 x 234.8 x 32mm), the laptop also features a six-cell 4,400mAh battery, support for Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi b/g/n, an optical drive, ports for HDMI, USB 3.0 (x2), USB 2.0 (x2), an SD slot and the requisite headphone jack. So far no official pricing or release dates have been made public for the Windows 7 rig, but when it does hit retailers' shelves, rest assured it'll be upgrade-ready for Redmond's next great OS. Follow on past the break for the official PR.

Don't let the AEC catch you unprepared - The Nation

Home ? opinion ? Don't let the AEC catch you unprepared

Guru speak

Aldwin Gatchalian July 27, 2012 1:00 am

The aims of the AEC are to form a single regional market and production base, fair economic competition among Asean members, the integration and development of SMEs to accelerate progress of less-developed members, and full integration with the global economy.

Asia's promising economic growth of the early 1990s collapsed because the financial system was not mature enough to handle the influx of capital investment. This led to the "asset-bubble burst" and the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Taking lessons from this experience, Asean believes that a single-market approach will give the region a better chance of survival against growing competition from India and China.

What it means for business

By now, managers should at least understand the basic risks and opportunities the new community will bring.

Managers should revisit their key strategy objectives and long-term plans to ensure that they are still relevant come 2015. Can suppliers support the potential increase in demand? Can companies continue to provide goods and services to their customers? Will they remain relevant in the market when the AEC is launched? Some Thai companies for instance, are thinking ahead by making cross-border investments and acquisitions. Meanwhile, large companies in the Philippines are taking a different approach by forming joint ventures in other Asean countries to distribute their products. Several telecommunication companies are also looking forward by expanding their network-sharing arrangements.

Businesses should monitor how regulatory changes will affect their organisations not only in their respective countries but in other Asean nations, too. Is your corporate governance strong enough to adapt to the change? Will your business plans or forecast be affected? What are the financial implications of the changes?

Government should likewise start revisiting policies on specific industries. Government should also join with business and educators to create curricula that reflect AEC goals.

Managing risk, opportunities

The role of governance teams and internal auditors is basically to assess the potential risks and business opportunities that the AEC will bring. Risk management strategies need to be reassessed.

For instance, the free movement of labour under the AEC means companies should ensure their governance and corporate policies address cultural differences when hiring foreign personnel. On the other hand, they should also protect their local employees' safety when sending them to neighbouring Asean nations. Travel, health and security protocols should be revisited. Procedures in acquiring goods must remain relevant and correct as goods and supplies become more easily commissioned. Supply chain strategies should be revisited to ensure that companies maximise the benefits of the AEC.

The governance team should ensure that their enterprise-risk-management can adapt to the AEC's new conditions. Business continuity and disaster recovery plans should also be revisited given that companies will be operating on a wider geographic scale.

Management should also be confident that their policies and procedures will hold up under AEC-related agreements. Internal auditors and risk consultants can help management in identifying, monitoring and managing business risks that go with the significant changes.

The AEC will open up great opportunities and possibilities for Asean countries, both within the community and at a global level. Management can rely on internal auditors' expertise to improve controls in key business processes, identify business risks and provide advice to minimise business risks. In turn, internal auditors need to expand their risk-management process to fully understand the impact and risks in their company's control environment.

While some companies in Asia continue to see them as a provider of traditional assurance and consultation, auditors are increasingly being called upon to play a proactive role in organisations' basic functions and give valuable, timely input to identify risks and recommend improvements.

Interior Design: Helping You Find Your Harmony | ej-fransen.com

You come home, you?re stressed with your job, you?re stressed with the cat, and you?re pretty much stressed about everything right now because it?s been one of those days. The last thing you want to come home to is a sink full of dishes and a disorganised living space. Don?t even look at ?that? table you hate. A lot of people might not realise it, but your living space is extremely important to the functionality of the rest of your life.

Take?Horizon Media ? New York?as an example; they?ve been voted No. 5 in the World?s best office interiors. They wanted a new office space to bring their staff together and increase interaction; so they had the vision and took the leap. With their improved working space, they were a lot happier in their roles and you whilst your workplace may not be so invested, you can transform your living space.

Think Feng Shui ? It was originally used to orient buildings, but seeing as you can?t change how your house has been built now, you can completely focus on turning the inside into your own personal haven.

Where do you start?

If you want to tackle your whole house, then so be it. But don?t stress yourself too much by taking too much on at a time. A good first step is starting with whichever room is your living room or perhaps even a family room:

  • Where to start? Start with the room you spend most time in.

So you?ve got your first task, deciding on a place to start is often stressful. A lot of people decorating or changing their homes often ask whether I think it?s beneficial enough to bring in a professional to decorate your home. This brings me to my next step:

  • Will you complete this by yourself/with a partner or will you need outside help?

Be honest with yourself: If you make a start on this alone, will you see it through to the end? Your inner harmony isn?t going to be settled by a room or task half finished; it will just end in frustration.

It?s important to know what it will cost. Do not stress yourself if you cannot afford the wallpaper you want; research a cheaper alternative. Do not of course mistake this with compromising on your vision, but in the real world, you need to keep within confines of a budget so you can ensure you finish your room.

  • Colour schemes and lay outs

You need to have a vision, and hopefully your budget has put this in perspective for you. Choosing a colour scheme should only come after you have decided on the room and looked at your budget. After all you probably wouldn?t decorate your bathroom in the same colours as your bedroom. Don?t change colour choices half way through or you may end up with a confused scheme at the end.

How do you carry on?

You?ve hit a brick wall, maybe not a literal one; the vision you started with deserted you last night and you?re back to unsettled and unhappy in your home.

  • Get back on track ? remember why you were completing this in the first place

Remember the night you came home and decided you needed a change? Remember that the wall colour was driving you to tears? Focus is your number one goal during the re-invention; focus on the reasons for the change and persevere with the project. Maybe now is the time to call in the help or the cavalry.

  • Is it time for professional help?

Have you lost your vision? Is it time to bring in those art consultants or the Feng Shui guys who do this for a living? Again, be honest with yourself; you?re not failing by needing help, and you can?t sit your guests in the Kitchen for the rest of your life.

  • Add your finishing touches

No one can force you to finish your project, but by staying focused and being methodical you should now be arriving at putting in your finishing touches. Whether you got in the art consultancy to help or not, you can put in your own personal touches now in the form of furniture or art work. This may be the time you want to get in an interior designer to help you look for the best pieces. Make your hard work sing louder by stamping your mark on the room

You?ve finished after days, weeks or maybe months of hard work. Harmonious living areas will help your general well-being, and why not? The time we don?t spend at work we spend at home, so comfort and happiness is important in your surroundings. Just try not to change your mind when you watch the home improvement programs and decide you prefer that lilac to the natural?colors?you?ve spent 3 months working on.

PSU coach O'Brien: Team will stay together

(AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)

(AP) ? Bill O'Brien is looking straight ahead. It's the only choice he really has at Penn State.

The questions keep coming and he doesn't flinch: How will he handle what has become one of the most difficult jobs in college football? How about other schools trying to lure his players away? How can he make do with reduced scholarships and no bowl appearances the next four years?

"The measure of a man is how you overcome adversity," O'Brien said Thursday at the Big Ten media day where the majority of questions centered on the plight of the Nittany Lions in wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

The NCAA delivered crushing sanctions to the program earlier this week and now the Nittany Lions have to get ready for a season where victories will be secondary to the heart they show on the field.

"I talked to them about ? without a shadow of a doubt ? they're going to be able to play six to seven bowl games per year in front of 108,000 screaming fans in Beaver Stadium and I expect it to be 108,000 fans in Beaver Stadium," O'Brien said.

It's time, he said, to move on.

"The sanctions are what they are. It's time to get up and get going," O'Brien said. He added he didn't know of any player who is planning to transfer from Penn State at the current time but doesn't anticipate losing any core players. Only time will tell there.

He also said didn't know which schools had visited State College to see if any of his players would be interested in leaving, although representatives from Illinois were in town earlier in the week.

"I have no idea which schools were on campus, nor do I care," O'Brien said.

Buzz has centered on the possible departure of Silas Redd, an incoming junior tailback who earned second-team All-Big Ten honors last season while rushing for 1,241 yards.

Senior Nittany Lions linebacker Michael Mauti said the university community has rallied around the team.

"I know people are behind us, I know the whole school's behind us, the Penn State family," he said.

"I've had at least 50 emails, 100 text messages, phone calls from everybody, alumni, players who played here in the '60s, 70s, 90s and active guys on rosters in the NFL. The heads of departments ? psychology, education. There's no doubt in my mind that there's a huge, huge, support base for us and when I get messages like that I put them up in my locker room for everyone to see and together to know that we do have that kind of support."

Penn State players were expected to skip the media session but a reverse was called and they were represented at the hotel near Soldier Field.

"We've got a very strong senior class this year and they've done a great job with leadership," junior guard John Urschell said. "After all these sanctions came out, they've done a great job setting a precedent for the rest of the team, sticking together and showing that we're going to keep our core football team."

Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said he has no plans to recruit the players at Penn State, suggesting it would violate what he calls a Big Ten coaching brotherhood.

Other members of the brotherhood weren't so sure about that.

"We're going to follow the rules and the rules allow you to recruit," said Purdue coach Danny Hope, who acknowledged contact between his staff and some PSU players. "For us not to compete would be a disadvantage for our football program. Whether anything materializes out of it, I don't know. If they're available, we're interested."

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he had a "problem" with recruiting at Penn State.

"I don't know enough about the rules," he said. "If a player reaches out, says, 'I want to leave here, I'm out of here, I'm gone,' and reaches out to someone, the player has a right to choose, especially by the rules, to go where he wants. To actively go get a player on a team, I'm not sure. ... I don't really understand the rule, I'm going to look into it."

Bielema has already decided.

"I made the decision as a head coach we would not reach out to any Penn State players," he said. "I think one of the things that I've loved and appreciated about being in this conference is there is a genuine respect for everybody in our league that you are a Big Ten brother and ... we're a group of coaches that have a network that's beyond anybody's expectations and helping us in recruiting."

Illinois coaches were in State College, Pa., on Wednesday and other coaches have said they've been in contact with players. Preseason practice starts at Penn State on Aug. 6. At least 13 top players and as many as 30 affirmed their commitment to Penn State on Wednesday, including Mauti and senior quarterback Matt McGloin.

New Illinois coach Tim Beckman said coaches seeking Penn State players have nothing to apologize for. He said the Illini sent a list of names to Penn State before doing anything else.

"We're just following the rules of the NCAA," he said. "We were in State College but we did not go on campus. We went to establishments outside campus and called some individuals. If they wanted to come by, it was their opportunity to come by."

Michigan coach Brady Hoke said he glanced at the Nittany Lions' roster but was not going after Nittany Lions players. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said there was no way the Wildcats would pursue Penn State players.

And Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said the Spartans would respond only if they were contacted. He did not give names.

"What we have done is if people have contacted us ? a coach, a parent ? we have followed through. That is the extent of it. If there are people who are receptive to that and come back with us, understand that I'm just here just to create opportunities," he said. "We're not going to invest in going beyond that."

It's a touchy subject. Commissioner Jim Delany spoke with league coaches.

"We're trying to put an override on this that allows an athlete as much opportunity as the rules allow, that allows for collegial relationships between our schools to be done in the right way," Delany said.

"It also puts the athletes and the coaches to interface if that's what they want to do. But I think it should be focused that there's an opportunity there for a school and a player, that's great, if not, they should move on. That's my view."

Ruling frees FDA to crack down on stem cell clinics

Peter Aldhous, San Francisco bureau chief

It's official: stem cells are drugs. At least, that's the opinion of the US District Court in Washington DC, which has ruled that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has the authority to regulate clinics offering controversial stem cell therapies.

Treatments in which stem cells are harvested from bone marrow and injected straight back into the same patient are deemed part of routine medical practice - not regulated by the US government. But if the cells are subjected to more than "minimal manipulation", the FDA maintains that the therapy becomes a "drug", which must be specifically approved for use.

It was on this basis that in 2008 the FDA began?moves to shut down?Regenerative Sciences, a clinic in Broomfield, Colorado, that treats orthopaedic problems using a stem cell therapy called Regenexx.? Regenerative Sciences challenged the FDA's authority to regulate its activities, setting the stage for a legal fight. In 2010, the FDA sought an injunction to take Regenexx off the market. This has now been granted in the court's ruling.

Christopher Centeno, medical director of Regenerative Sciences, vows to appeal. "This is really round one," he says. "Our position remains that a patient's cells are not drugs."

?

Regenexx consists of mesenchymal stem cells, which give rise to tissues including bone and cartilage, taken from a patient's bone marrow and grown in culture for about two weeks. Centeno has published a series of case reports describing its use to treat joint problems - but no controlled clinical trials."I think it's a good ruling, and I'm glad to see that that the FDA has exercised its muscle on the case," says Christopher Scott, who heads the Program on Stem Cells in Society at Stanford University in California.

Scott hopes that the FDA will now step up its efforts to regulate other clinics offering unproven stem cell therapies. These include Celltex of Sugar Land, Texas, which rose to prominence after Texas governor Rick Perry was injected with stem cells supplied by the company to aid his recovery from back surgery.

Last month, the Houston Chronicle revealed?that FDA inspectors had found multiple violations of good manufacturing practice at Celltex.

New York Times ends support for BlackBerry, WebOS apps

Looks like the New York Times is signaling the death knell for RIM, albeit subtly. In a move that surely underscores the withering faith content companies have for the once beloved platform, the venerable Sulzberger-backed news organization has pulled all support for its DealBook Reader and NYTimes app for BlackBerry as of July 23rd. Users that attempt to access that application in the days since will find a stale content list that no longer updates and are being urged, instead, to visit the paper's mobile site for a "more complete... experience." And as if the ailing Waterloo-based company hadn't suffered enough indignity, it's been cast out of the developer pen alongside WebOS, joining PalmPre users on the reject list. Not to worry though, the Times crossword app has yet to get the axe -- that's got to be some consolation, no? You can check out the NYT's official line on its decision at the source below.
