New Photos Of Assembled iPhone 5 Leak Out Of China: Taller, Thinner, Stronger

With less than two weeks until the official unveiling, assembled iPhones seem to be circulating through the back rooms of the supply chain. The front screen does indeed look cinema-like and also like a TV remote control.

The front camera has moved position, centered now, above the earpiece, but the camera on the back looks significantly different than in the iPhone 4 and 4s, with a more compact lens, and an unidentified round element between the lens and the flash.

Nowhereelse.fr, which has released the pictures (originally from iColoros design studio, via?digi.sohu.com in China) is careful to say (translated by Google, amended by me) that, ?the submission date mentioned above has not yet been confirmed and we are not able to say that the visible elements on the following pictures are indeed those of the next iPhone, but frankly,?can there still be any doubt??

The current supposed model is strikingly similar to?3d renderings from June?by Bryce Haymond?s Utah based design studio Blackpool Creative:

As?Steve Hemmerstoffer of Nowhereelse.fr says, can there still be any doubt?

Google Will Kill Its TV Advertising Business - Business Insider

Google has decided to pull the plug on Google TV Ads, its five-year attempt to convert the cable and broadcast TV industry into selling its available ad inventory on an online ad exchange.

The news comes on the same day that Google was rumored to be exploring the sale of the TV set-top box unit of its Motorola Mobility unit.

Conversely, Google is plowing ahead with its Google Fiber experiment, which brings superfast internet access?and possibly pay TV?to people in Kansas City.

The move comes eight months after it signed up Cox Media as a partner, bringing the network to 42 million households. The network included Dish Network, DirecTV, VerizonFiOS, and Viamedia.

Google TV is unaffected.

The death of Google TV ads is a huge victory for the broadcast and cable networks, who are fighting an epic war against the web, which threatens to turn traditional TV viewing into the newspaper business of the 21st Century.

NBC, for instance, snubbed Google back in 2010 after flirting with the idea of offering inventory via the search giant.

Google TV Ads was the third major attempt to start an online electronic exchange for TV ads, all of which have been rendered extinct by cable and network TV's refusal to allow any programming inventory to be sold on them. (The other three were SpotRunner, Malibu Media and Walmart.)

Microsoft also beat a retreat after failing to dent the TV business.

The cablers and the nets aren't stupid: They operate like a cartel, restricting supply of inventory even as demand?and audiences?fall.

Shishir Mehrotra, Google's vp/product for YouTube and video, gave this explanation:

"... video is increasingly going digital and users are now watching across numerous devices.? So we?ve made the hard decision to close our TV Ads product over the next few months and move the team to other areas at Google.? We?ll be doubling down on video solutions for our clients (like YouTube, AdWords for Video, and ad serving tools for web video publishers).? We also see opportunities to help users access web content on their TV screens, through products like Google TV."

Behavioral Interview ? Behavioral interview for human resources ...

Even the human resource pros need help with a behavioral interview, particularly for those that are new to HR roles.

First of remember that your behavioral interview will be looking to examine your behaviors AND your technical competency in HR issues. As with all behavioral interviews your interviewer will ask you questions bout your past experiences to identify both the positive and negative behaviors that you may have demonstrated.

That questioning will come in the form of a series of laddered question.

Small world big responsibility

HR professionals can exist as part of a team, as a business partner or as a sole operative. Even in large organisations HR is often one of the first to be cut along with the marketing department! Professionals are expected to perform many functions including the delivering of change projects.

Key behaviors for a HR professional

Information gathering ? investigations, policy, pay, resourcing, aligning to future business plans

People development ? its not just about the application of policy, it?s also helping the organisation grow and develop through the success of its people. This can include having an idea for the future changes to work patterns, a connected society, social media etc

Communication ? every which way ! With the employee, the line manager, the department head, business owner, HR management chain, external stakeholders and policy advisors

Collaboration ? as with communication HR role holders have to be able work well with many different stakeholders to get the job done from advertising and communication through to the board and senior management.

Influencing ? ensuring HR policy is followed and helping to guide employees through personal development and process is important. Management often don?t see the value in HR functions which are often seen as blockers their change ambitions. influencing these stakeholders is vital to successful deliver.

Team work ? both in the HR team and within the business, your likely to operate in an environment where you are helping teams and departments either stay compliant or change

Role specific HR skills

Policy and strategy creation (including talent programmes, dispute polices)

Employee and discrimination law including race, sex, disability

Profile development and job profiling

Work life and organisational plans

Employee Benefits Schemes, HR management systems

Recruitment platforms and process

Succession planning, reward and performance schemes and remuneration models

Behavioral interview questions for a human resources professional

Tell me about an occasion when you have to investigate a HR policy breach ? How did you develop an understanding of the problem ? How did you ensure you had all the information hat you needed ? What steps did uptake to understand policy ? What was the outcome ?

Describe a time when yo had to develop an understanding of future business strategy ? How did you understand the implications for human resources ? How did you ensure HR requirements where considered ? What was the result ?

Tell me about a time when the business change required your support ? How did you engage with the relevant stakeholders ? How did you ensure the change was appropriately resourced ? How was HR policy changed or did it require interpretation ? Would you do anything differently next time ?

World stocks mostly down amid economic uncertainty

TOKYO (AP) ? Shares fell Thursday as positive news on U.S. economic growth dashed hopes for fresh measures by the U.S. Federal Reserve, and gloomy retail sales in Japan deepened concern over its recovery.

In early European trading, the FTSE index of leading British shares fell 0.2 percent to 5,729.76, while France's CAC-40 also edged 0.2 percent lower, to 3,407.41. The DAX in Germany lost 0.6 percent to 6,966.11.

Negative sentiment persisted despite assurances by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is visiting China, of the eurozone's commitment to restoring its credibility.

Global stock trading has remained thin as investors, wary of taking risky bets, await fresh moves to revive the U.S. economic recovery. Those could come in a key speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday.

News that the American economy grew faster than earlier reported in the April-June quarter, at a 1.7 percent annual pace, was a discouraging factor in the sense that it suggests no major monetary easing is likely, said Jackson Wong of Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped to another three-year low on Thursday, losing 0.03 percent to 2,052.58.

"We just don't have any catalyst. No rebound is likely without a major policy move," Wong said.

Elsewhere in Asia, the Tokyo Stock Exchange's benchmark Nikkei fell 1 percent to 8,983.78 and South Korea's Kospi slipped 1.2 percent to 1,906.38. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index also was down 1.2 percent to 19,545.93, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.9 percent to 4,315.70.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan also fell.

In Japan, a larger-than-expected 0.8 percent drop in retail sales in July from the year before added to worries over the economic outlook.

Ahead of the opening bell, stocks on Wall Street were trending downward. Dow futures were trading down 0.2 percent to 13,054, while S&P 500 futures were down 0.3 percent to 1,403.50.

The euro rose to $1.2557 from $1.2528 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar fell to 78.62 yen from 78.70 yen.

Benchmark oil for October delivery fell 19 cents to $95.30 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Overtaxing: The FCC's Broadband Tax | Policy Interns

In April, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filed a request?for comments on a proposal that would effectively place a tax on broadband Internet service.? This move has largely flown under the radar, but fortunately, people have begun to take notice.? Obviously, a tax on broadband Internet service would have a large impact across the country, including affecting basically every person reading this article.

Under the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the FCC can require ?every telecommunications carrier that provides interstate telecommunications services? to contribute to the Universal Service Fund (USF), as well as ?any provider of interstate telecommunications? if the public interest so requires.?? This provision is applied to telephone service providers.? The USF has been used historically to promote the extension of telephone service to rural areas, by requiring larger contributions from urban providers, and paying out to rural providers.?

This, historically, has not applied to Internet providers, although Internet phone and voice communications services have been included within the Act.? Broadband providers could arguably qualify as ?telecommunications providers? under the definitions in the Act, and could be required to pay into the USF if ?public interest so requires.?? This payment would then be passed along to the consumers, effectively, though not technically, taxing them for broadband service.

The FCC would use these funds to extend broadband coverage to a larger number of areas, almost certainly in the same manner they use the USF to extend phone service to rural areas. This would mean higher broadband prices for people living in urban areas.

This would appear to be arguably within the FCC?s authority, but a few recent developments make it a bit more complicated.? In the recent ObamaCare opinion, the Supreme Court has now established a ?if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck? approach to determining whether fees are actually taxes; this may be the new norm.?

If this is the case, the FCC runs into two main problems.? First, they have not been granted the power to tax.? Second, the Internet Tax Freedom Act Amendments of 2007 have extended the moratorium on Internet taxes until November, 2014.? This applies to both state and federal governments, and shows that not only can the government not tax the way the FCC intends here, but shows a desire by Congress not to do exactly what the FCC proposes.? The FCC exceeds its authority if it acts contrary to the will of Congress, in this case evidenced by Congress passing provisions to ensure that Internet providers are not taxed.?

With so many different angles, this could be decided either way. The Telecommunications Act has not applied to broadband in the past, but broadband could fit in its definitions.? The FCC cannot tax, but can require contributions to a fund.? ?These contributions, if seen as a tax, would be invalid under the ITFA, but if seen as non-tax contributions, could be allowed. The FCC?s actions go against the intent of Congress, but do not violate the letter of the Telecommunications Act.

There are a lot of policy and legal interactions here, but the FCC has the backing of some pretty heavy-hitters arguing for public policy, most notably, Google.? Obviously, it would benefit Google if more people had Internet, and Google would not be the one paying into the UFC, so perhaps this is not too surprising.? Whether the FCC is allowed to take this action remains to be seen, but it is alarming that the FCC intends to take action that is so clearly opposed to the aims of Congress by taxing broadband providers.?

Indigenous Asian Tribe May Hold Genetic Clues to Skin Cancer in ...

Studying the genetics of an indigenous Malaysian tribe may be the key to unlocking the mystery that has long perplexed scientists: why East Asians have light skin but lower skin cancer rates than Europeans.

Follow us

An international group of scientists claim that understanding the differences in skin color genes between Asians and Europeans could lead to a better way to protect people from skin cancer.

Previously, researchers from the Penn State College of Medicine were able to identify a unique gene in Europeans that contributes to lighter skin color.

They found that Europeans possess mutations in the genes SLC24A5 and SLC45A2 that are largely responsible for their pigmentation, showing only single amino acid differences between Europeans and West Africans.

Researchers said that while East Asians are also light skinned, these European alleles were not present in people from countries like China, Japan and Korea, suggesting that, while both groups of people evolved lighter skin color for better production of vitamin D in northern climates where there is less sunlight, they did so in a different way.

Researchers believe that the difference in evolution also affects skin cancer rates.

While Europeans are 10 to 20 times more likely to develop melanoma than Africans, East Asians have the same melanoma rates as their African counterparts despite possessing a lighter skin tone.

Experts explained that this difference can only be explained when the gene mutations for East Asians and Europeans are found.

"By finding the differences, we have the potential to find ways to make people with the European ancestry genes less susceptible to skin cancer," Dr. Keith Cheng, professor of pathology at Penn State College said in a statement.

Identifying the mutations will be a challenge because it involves finding and studying a population that includes a blend of original African ancestry and East Asian ancestry, with little European contribution.

Researchers believe that one of the three indigenous populations from Peninsular Malaysia called the Senoi meet this condition. The Senoi people are believed to be descendants of a dark-skinned tribe called the Negrito, and a regional Mongoloid population of Indo-China, like the Proto-Malay.

Researchers explain that that because people from the Senoi tribe are darker than Northeast Asians, they will be able to focus on finding the primary genetic mutation of light skin color in Asians without seeing more advanced skin lightening mutations.

Researchers have recently collected blood samples from people in the Senoi tribe, and they hope that the samples will help them identify which mutation might be responsible for the skin color of East Asians, according to a study published in the journal PLoS ONE.

"As the world is becoming globalized, populations are becoming increasingly mixed," Researcher Khai C. Ang, a postdoctoral fellow in the Cheng lab, said in a statement. "Time is running out and it will become increasingly difficult to establish how East Asian skin colors evolved."

"Skin color has been tied to human welfare in modern history," Cheng concluded. "It is important for us as a species to realize that our skin color is determined by only a small number of minute changes in our DNA -- changes that have nothing to do with the value of human beings."

This book cover image released by Dutton shows "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama Bin Laden," by Mark Owen with Kevin Maurer. A first-hand account of the Navy SEAL mission that killed Osama bin Laden is coming out Sept. 11. Dutton announced Wednesday that Mark Owen?s ?No Easy Day? will ?set the record straight? on the raid in Pakistan in May 2011. ?Mark Owen? is a pseudonym for the combat veteran who was one of the first fighters to enter bin Laden?s third floor hideout and also witnessed his death, according to Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA). (AP Photo/Dutton)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.

Bin Laden apparently was hit in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in "No Easy Day." The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a "point man" going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. "Less than five steps" from top of the stairs, he heard "suppressed" gunfire: "BOP. BOP." The point man had seen a "man peeking out of the door" on the right side of the hallway.

The author writes that bin Laden ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the terrorist crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner and he and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sites on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless. The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

In the account related by administration officials after the raid in Pakistan, the SEALs shot bin Laden only after he ducked back into the bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor would not comment on the apparent contradiction late Tuesday. But he said in an email, "As President Obama said on the night that justice was brought to Osama bin Laden, 'We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.'"

"No Easy Day" was due out Sept. 11, but Dutton announced the book would be available a week early, Sept. 4, because of a surge of orders due to advance publicity that drove the book to the top of the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com best-seller lists.

The Associated Press purchased a copy of the book Tuesday.

The account is sure to again raise questions as to whether the raid was intended to capture or simply to kill bin Laden. Bissonette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, a lawyer from "either" the White House or Defense Department told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said that if bin Laden was "naked with his hands up," they should not "engage" him. If bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should "detain him."

In another possibly uncomfortable revelation for U.S. officials who say bin Laden's body was treated with dignity before being given a full Muslim burial at sea, the author reveals that in the cramped helicopter flight out of the compound, one of the SEALs called "Walt" ? one of the pseudonyms the author used for his fellow SEALs ? was sitting on bin Laden's chest as the body lay at the author's feet in the middle of the cabin, for the short flight to a refueling stop inside Pakistan where a third helicopter was waiting.

This is common practice, as troops sometimes must sit on their own war dead in packed helicopters. Space was cramped because one of the helicopters had crashed in the initial assault, leaving little space for the roughly two dozen commandos in the two aircraft that remained. When the commandos reached the third aircraft, bin Laden's body was moved to it.

Bissonnette writes disparagingly that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the May 2011 raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid.

But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

Bissonnette writes less flatteringly of meeting Vice President Joe Biden along with Obama at the headquarters of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment after the raid. He says Biden told "lame jokes" no one understood, reminding him of "someone's drunken uncle at Christmas dinner."

Beyond such embarrassing observations, U.S. officials fear the book may include classified information, as it did not undergo the formal review required by the Pentagon for works published by former or current Defense Department employees.

Officials from the Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information and could take legal action against the author.

In a statement provided to The Associated Press, the author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to The Associated Press.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

LiveViewGPS Live Trac EZ

The LiveViewGPS Live Trac EZ ($169 direct) is a real-time automotive GPS tracking device that plugs right into your car's ODB-II port, like the CarMD diagnostic tool. With the Live Trac EZ , you can configure alerts for speed, ignition, and location zones, and view historical location data with satellite, bird's eye, and hybrid map views, as well as generate reports. It's not perfect, but it does exactly the job it's designed to do, whether it's for company use monitoring employees or for more illicit purposes.

Service and Setup
To use the Live Trac EZ, you also need to sign up for the company's service, which costs $29.95 per month on a no-contract basis for 10-second updates, or $39.95 per month for 5-second updates. There's also an activation fee of $19.95 per device. This can get expensive quickly, as you can imagine, especially if you're outfitting a fleet of company vehicles. To get started, head to www.liveviewgps.com and click the Activate button; the company only processes activations weekdays from 8am to 4pm PST. Processing can take a few hours. Once your unit is activated, you'll get a username and password.

The Live Trac EZ is a small plastic square that measures roughly 2 by 1.5 by 0.8 inches (HWD) and weighs about an ounce. The side of the device contains green, blue, and red LED lights. They blink at varying speeds to show power, cellular signal status, and satellite signal status. There's also a microUSB port, but you don't use it for anything?it's intended for troubleshooting only.

Installation takes just a few seconds, and consists mainly of figuring out where the car's ODB-II port is. Any passenger car or truck built after 1996 will have this port; it's usually located underneath the dashboard on the driver's side, and is often used for diagnostics and for connecting the car to emissions testing computers. Once you find it, plug in the Live Track EZ, and that's it?you're done.

The Nissan Sentra I tested with had its ODB-II port underneath the steering column and to the left, like most cars, except that this one faced straight down. As a result, you could easily see the Live Trac EZ sticking out underneath the dashboard, and could even knock into it with your left leg while driving. Just getting into the car once or twice, I doubt someone would see it unless they were explicitly looking for it, but standing outside with the driver's side door open, it was fairly obvious. Having said that, actually using this device to track someone without their knowledge strikes me as extremely creepy.

LiveViewGPS Live Trac EZ

Monitoring, Alerts, and Reporting
So how does the Live Trac EZ work? Once you're up and running, and the Live Trac EZ is installed in the car, you can view the vehicle's location at any time by logging into the website with your name and password. The device transmits location data every 10 seconds whenever the car is moving at least 3mph in a given direction. With the ignition off, it sends an update every 30 minutes.

Once logged into the website, you'll see a smoothly animated street and satellite view map showing the car's current location. You can add weather and traffic control, show recently driven routes, and generate reports. You can also configure alerts that send email and SMS notifications. For example, Speed Alerts let you set a threshold that sends an alert whenever the vehicle exceeds, say, 65mph. You can do the same for preconfigured routes, as well as whether the ignition is started or stopped, or whenever the car enters a predefined zone on the map, which you can set up by pinning various points.

The Reporting section has a bit of an old-school Windows feel to it, with plenty of wasted space and too many confirmation buttons. But you do get detailed results, including a speed graph, time stamps, and compass headings, although the latter are coded as 360-degree numbers instead of North or East, which would have been easier to understand. A mobile app is also available for both iOS (iPhone or iPad) and Android devices, if you'd rather check location info on the go instead of while seated at a computer.

LiveViewGPS Live Trac EZ

Historical Playback and Conclusions
My favorite feature, though, is History Playback, which walks you through a set time period. This way you don't have to watch the map in real-time to see where the car is going; you can just check in later. This worked great in our tests; you can adjust the speed it runs at, and it displays a thick red line over the map showing where the car has been. For commercial use, a route planner lets you define multiple delivery points, which you can then look at in progress to make sure your drivers are sticking to the assigned schedule.

One other quirk: When I was done, I had a really hard time removing the Live Trac EZ from the ODB-II port. It was stuck in so tight that the entire plastic housing gave way first, leaving the exposed circuit boards sticking out of the bottom of the Sentra's dashboard. After about 10 minutes of careful reassembly and strong pulling, I finally got the device out. This could be specific to the car I tested it with, but I can say I've never had this much trouble pulling a device from an ODB-II port before.

Overall, the Live Trac EZ does a solid job, delivering accurate tracking results and useful trip data. The website is easy to use, but I saw a few graphical glitches; for example, centering the map around the car icon never worked properly, and sometimes the page froze, which I could only fix by logging in again. But this is a fairly new and specific product, so some refinement issues are forgiveable in our view. More pressing is the cost, which is okay for one vehicle for a few months, but can get out of hand quickly once you begin equipping a fleet of cars or trucks. The LandAirSea SilverCloud offers a smoother interface and faster updates, but it starts at $369. If you don't need real-time monitoring and just want something that tracks data you can view later on, the LandAirSea Tracking Key does the job for just $179, although you'll need to retrieve the device from the vehicle and plug it into your computer before you can see anything.

Patch 5.0.4 is live and most of your achievements, pets and mounts are now account-wide. The problem is that they will not all show up when you first log in. You also may find that you don't have as many of each pet as you thought you did. Here's what you should know

So if you logged in and didn't like the size of your pet and mount journal, log on to all of your characters.

The full posts from Blizzard with this information are after the break.

It's finally here, and you'll be able to enjoy just about every mount and pet you own on any character, and any license, under a single Battle.net account. You can also work on a wide variety of Achievements from multiple characters. Please be aware of the rules and guidelines we've just posted for how you can coalesce your account-wide pets and mounts smoothly and safely.

*To see all of your achievements, pets, and mounts, you'll want to log into every character at least once.

When Patch 5.0.4 goes live in the next week, we will be implementing systems that prepare characters for the Pet Battles system that is coming with World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, and bringing account-wide non-combat pets to the game. During the patching process, non-combat pets will be migrated among your characters, with the final result being all of your non-combat pets available to all of your characters. This initial adjustment to your catalog of pets includes several changes that are worth noting.

1. There will be a limit of 500 pets, per player, that can be carried going forward.
Players will be allowed to go over the 500 pet cap during the 5.0.4 migration.
The migration will not convert more than a total of 1500 pets for a player.
Unique pets will be merged, so there will not be more than one unique pet on an account.

2. Pets that can only be used by characters of the other faction will be greyed out.
Such pets can only be summoned by characters of the proper faction.
Examples include: Balloons, Moonkin Hatchlings.
There are certain pets that will not be account-wide. Examples include: Guild Page, Guild Herald, Argent Squire, Argent Gruntling.

3. Players should not see more than one of any unique pets. Examles include: Lil' KT, Murky, and Frosty.

4. All standard pets will be merged. There will be a limit of three per type for players, but the migration can exceed this limit. Examples of standard pets: Orange Tabby Cat, Brown Prairie Dog, Crimson Whelpling.

It's open warfare between Alliance and Horde in Mists of Pandaria, World of Warcraft's next expansion. Jump into five new levels with new talents and class mechanics, try the new monk class, and create a pandaren character to ally with either Horde or Alliance. or whatever the crisis may be ? has a life of its own. A lesson in sleep learning

Monday, August 27, 2012

Is sleep learning possible? A new Weizmann Institute study appearing today in Nature Neuroscience has found that if certain odors are presented after tones during sleep, people will start sniffing when they hear the tones alone ? even when no odor is present ? both during sleep and, later, when awake. In other words, people can learn new information while they sleep, and this can unconsciously modify their waking behavior.

Sleep-learning experiments are notoriously difficult to conduct. For one thing, one must be sure that the subjects are actually asleep and stay that way during the "lessons." The most rigorous trials of verbal sleep learning have failed to show any new knowledge taking root. While more and more research has demonstrated the importance of sleep for learning and memory consolidation, none had managed to show actual learning of new information taking place in an adult brain during sleep.

Prof. Noam Sobel and research student Anat Arzi, together with Sobel's group in the Institute's Neurobiology Department in collaboration with researchers from Loewenstein Hospital and the Academic College of Tel Aviv ? Jaffa, chose to experiment with a type of conditioning that involves exposing subjects to a tone followed by an odor, so that they soon exhibit a similar response to the tone as they would to the odor. The pairing of tones and odors presented several advantages. Neither wakes the sleeper (in fact, certain odors can promote sound sleep), yet the brain processes them and even reacts during slumber. Moreover, the sense of smell holds a unique non-verbal measure that can be observed ? namely sniffing. The researchers found that, in the case of smelling, the sleeping brain acts much as it does when awake: We inhale deeply when we smell a pleasant aroma but stop our inhalation short when assaulted by a bad smell. This variation in sniffing could be recorded whether the subjects were asleep or awake. Finally, this type of conditioning, while it may appear to be quite simple, is associated with some higher brain areas ? including the hippocampus, which is involved in memory formation.

In the experiments, the subjects slept in a special lab while their sleep state was continuously monitored. (Waking up during the conditioning ? even for a moment ? disqualified the results.) As they slept, a tone was played, followed by an odor ? either pleasant or unpleasant. Then another tone was played, followed by an odor at the opposite end of the pleasantness scale. Over the course of the night, the associations were partially reinforced, so that the subject was exposed to just the tones as well. The sleeping volunteers reacted to the tones alone as if the associated odor were still present ? by either sniffing deeply or taking shallow breaths.

The next day, the now awake subjects again heard the tones alone ? with no accompanying odor. Although they had no conscious recollection of listening to them during the night, their breathing patterns told a different story. When exposed to tones that had been paired with pleasant odors, they sniffed deeply, while the second tones ? those associated with bad smells ? provoked short, shallow sniffs.

The team then asked whether this type of learning is tied to a particular phase of sleep. In a second experiment, they divided the sleep cycles into rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, and then induced the conditioning during only one phase or the other. Surprisingly, they found that the learned response was more pronounced during the REM phase, but the transfer of the association from sleep to waking was evident only when learning took place during the non-REM phase. Sobel and Arzi suggest that during REM sleep we may be more open to influence from the stimuli in our surroundings, but so-called "dream amnesia" ? which makes us forget most of our dreams ? may operate on any conditioning occurring in that stage of sleep. In contrast, non-REM sleep is the phase that is important for memory consolidation, so it might also play a role in this form of sleep-learning.

Although Sobel's lab studies the sense of smell, Arzi intends to continue investigating brain processing in altered states of consciousness such as sleep and coma. "Now that we know that some kind of sleep learning is possible," says Arzi, "we want to find where the limits lie ? what information can be learned during sleep and what information cannot."

Brisbane Psychologist - How To Cope With Grief Resulting From ...

Mourning can take a long time ranging from a few weeks to several years. However the experience of losing a loved one remains with a person their whole lives. There are a number of ways of dealing with grief according to Brisbane psychologist.

i. Give your self enough time to come to terms with the loss. Do not rush your grief but spend time with others who you trust and talk about what you feel.

ii. Accept the show condolence from others regardless of how awkward they might be. It will help to strengthen the bond with others experiencing the same loss.

iii. Rest and give yourself treats that help you relax. Take hot baths, get involved in a communal project, cycle, take hikes, have afternoon naps, have your favorite meal and so on.

This will help you not only help you to deal with the exhaustion but it also distracts you from the grief.

iv. ? Set short-term goals for things you will do within a period a week or two. These goals will help you to get a sense of continuity. The key to overcoming debilitating grief is to live a day at a time. As time progresses you can then begin to set longer term goals.

v. Seek assistance in handling your responsibilities in the trying period of grief. For instance have a relative come live with you if you have kids. You can also move in with relatives for a time.

vi. ? If you find yourself going back to emotions of intense sadness, don?t be hard on yourself. Grief does not pass completely. Expect this to happen.

The frequency and intensity will decrease with time thus the goal is to remain positive.

vii. ? Seek the counsel of people who have gone through the experience of losing a loved one. You are bound to find out that such people will give you a lot of hope no matter how bleak the future might seem.

viii. Avoid all forms of drug and alcohol abuse. These substances can prevent you from coming to terms with the death and resolving your grief. The outcome is dependence on the substances whenever you recall the loss. The avoidance also includes prescription medication that will alter your mood. The best way to deal with grief is to experience it fully.

ix. When making plans for the future give yourself some leeway to change your mind. During the grieving stage it is normal to be uncertain of yourself. Your priorities are bound to change as you adjust to the situation.

The above steps are just some of the simple techniques of dealing with grief. In order to get a more detailed approach you should consider visiting a Brisbane psychologist. This is if you happen to be lining in Waterford, Edens Landing, Loganholme, Slacks Creek or Matterhorn. Grief is an emotion that is quite normal but should not be left to escalate.

Mother of Empire State Building Gunman Speaks Out, Wonders Why

The mother of Jeffrey T. Johnson harbors no ill will toward the NYPD. She understands why her son - who shot an ex-colleague last week before being gunned down by multiple police officers - was killed on the streets of New York City.

But that doesn't mean she understands what drove Johnson to commit such a heinous act outside the Empire State Building on August 24.

“I don’t blame police in New York for shooting my son because he killed somebody, but for me, he hasn’t changed," Ms. Johnson tells The New York Times in a new interview. "He’s still the kindhearted, caring person who loved all kinds of animals and I’m sure he loved us. You know a mother always tries to look for the best in you.”

Jeffrey T. Johnson

For privacy's sake, Ms. Johnson asked for her first name to be withheld, but she did give readers a bit of insight into her child.

He moved from Japan to Georgia when he was an infant. He was nearly killed in a car accident when he was 11. His longtime cat recently died in his arms, a development that left Johnson's life "diminished tenfold" according to a letter he wrote his mother.

He joined the Coast Guard after dropping out of college and was married for four years before a divorce about three decades ago.

Johnson murdered former coworker Steven Ercolino, police believe, because he blamed the account executive for his firing last year from Hazan Imports, where Johnson designed women's T-shirts. He then aimed his weapon at two cops and was shot dead.

“I believe that he turned and pointed the gun at them to make sure that they would shoot him and he would die,” Ms. Johnson told the newspaper.

After the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks, Johnson, who lived in New York at the time, hoped to return to the Coast Guard.

“He was very patriotic,” his mother said. “He wanted to fight again, but the government told him he was too old.”

Ms. Johnson said she hasn't seen her son since 1990, but - until this January - the two talked on the phone every Sunday. She last chatted with Jeffrey on April 6 when he called to wish her a happy birthday.

Not long after that, he sent her a two-page letter that focused significantly on the loss of his cat.

“I am astonished by how much I miss him,” Jeffrey wrote. “He just filled every room in the apartment. Nothing seems special without him around. It embarrasses me that I feel this way. Life is bigger than one cat or me or you. But I can’t shake the feeling that life has been diminished tenfold by Romeo’s parting.”

Johnson was forced to euthanize the cat due to cancer and wrote ominously to his mother a few months afterward that he "honestly would have traded places with him.”

Fitness Secrets Of Russian Athletes | Manila Style

This really is one significant problem if this involves the conventional diets that many people begin. As these diets are standardized, it?s much more likely that you are not really eating probably the most optimal diet for you personally. If you are searching at the popular diet plans, you need to search for those that permit the most personalization.

The majority of the weight loss diets promote to consume a specific food group and restrict other recommended food groups. Such diets may show temporary results. Should you follow these restricted diets for any very long time, you might develop some health issues at later stage because these diets don?t contain all of the necessary nutrition needed for you.

Diet Is the quickest growing segment from the nutritional supplement industry. Sales of diet pills and related supplements happen to be growing 10-20 percent yearly to the stage where this past year they arrived at $2 billion. Thinking about the truth that 60% from the U.S. human population are overweight or obese, it?s no surprise that a number of us are searching for a method to drop unwanted weight.

Starvation? Yes, all diets result in weight loss by lowering the quantity of what you eat. By consuming less calories your personal body translates this like a potential food shortage also it responds by conserving energy, to ensure that you are able to survive the famine.

Fitness secret: Russian sports athletes eat healthy food choices.

Nutritional supplement term usually signifies items made from a number of from the fundamental nutrition, for instance vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Based on DSHEA (Nutritional Supplement Health insurance and Education Act), nutritional supplement is, with a few exceptions, any product meant for ingestion like a supplement towards the diet. Good examples are vitamins, minerals, herbal treatments, botanicals, proteins, metabolites, etc.

Diet is really a dreadful word for many people since it means food deprivation. This is particularly so for individuals who like to eat, hearing this word appears like asking these to commit suicide. However, the word diet isn?t what we should know so that it is, because the phrase the term diet is ?the typical drink and food of the person? or ?something that?s used, loved or provided regularly?. Getting stated this, there is nothing dreadful within the word actually, it?s something loved because the dictionary informs us.

However, your opinions might change upon reading through the reduced-carb diet overview. Within the low-carb diet overview, become familiar with that energy doesn?t originate from carbohydrates alone. Low-carb diet overview will even tell you just how good fats become energy similar to carbohydrates, as you may know so that it is. Low-carb diet overview will likewise let you know about the suggested carbohydrates like wholegrain, fruits and veggies.

Efforts to lower the cholesterol through cholesterol lowering diets have experienced only modest effects to date. So that they can boost the effectiveness of cholesterol lowering diets in preventing coronary disease, the Adult Treatment Panel from the National Cholesterol Education Program has suggested adding plant sterols and viscous materials towards the diet. None of Russia?s star sports athletes faced the load-loss (or putting on weight, for your matter) problem, that is harmful since it can trigger a rest-lower. Weight-bodybuilders and wrestlers went for protein: farms from the Moscow region delievered pork and beef, as the China furnished fish and caviar. Volleyball, basketball and handball gamers required worry about their vit a levels, consuming butter, sourcream, egg yolk and seafood. Track and area sports athletes require more vitamins and microelements to prove their worth: enter fruit, veggies, nuts, potherbs and seed-oil. Runners and swimmers, who require particular stamina, only eat chicken broth prior to the start, while marathon runners only drink a combination of water and glucose. If this involves weight, the charming Siberian girl Irina Chaschina, 22, who?s 165 centimetres tall (5? 5?), is just 46 kg (101 lb). Unlike Alina Kabaeva, her team mate and prime rival in the forthcoming Olympic games, Irina isn?t disposed to additional weight and had not placed on 10 kg (22 lb) within the wake from the doping scandal. Per week prior to the Olympic games Irina?s daily ration uncluded chocolates, rye bread with caviar (no butter), low-body fat youghurt, a glass of kefir, cucumber and tomato salad (no oil, no mayonnaise), fresh vegetable and fruit juices. Irina does not usually require a diet to keep her weight, yet sometimes she goes a b light diet that?s wealthy in fruit and vegetables. The fruit diet Breakfast : a glass of fresh orange or any fruit juice. Lunch : fruit salad, composed of equal levels of cut oranges, pineapples, kiwi and peeled apples, cleaned lower with juice freshly squashed from one of these simple fruits. Supper : a glass of still standard water along with a eco-friendly apple. Adhering for this diet for five-seven days, a determined person may shed 3-5 kg (7-11 lb).

Additionally to those points, I have broadly layed out the reduced carb diet plans, which appear to become taking up the minds of dieters and scientists alike, along with the research for and against pertinent towards the reduced carb diet plans.

Negative calorie meals are stated to make use of more calories to digest compared to calorie content from the meals themselves, leading to an adverse calorie balance. Therefore, it is natural to think about a diet that contains these meals for weight loss. More about detox diets at http://world wide web.diet-detox.info

People diet for many reasons, and with a lot of aims in your mind. Regardless of what your aims are, the very best diet to attain them is really a personalized one. A customized diet which fits you is the thing you need, whether you need to get a lean body, or simply slim down.

The weight loss on low-carb diets is really a purpose of caloric restriction and diet duration, and never with reduced carb intake. This finding indicates that if you wish to slim down, you need to eat less calories and achieve this on the very long time period.

Magnetic hybrid motorbike unveiled in Japan - Japanese Electric Cars

The Japanese automaker has unveiled the prototype of a new electric motorbike carrying a hybrid magnetic motor, which can run almost noiselessly up to 180 kilometers (112 miles) on a single charge. Tokyo-based Axle Corporation says that the battery of the motorcycle next generation of electric vehicles can be charged at home, in the same way a cell phone. It takes a little over 6 hours to fully charge the battery, and the vehicle?s maximum speed is capable of reaching 150 km per hour (93 miles per hour). The company says the futuristic motorbike enjoys high energy efficiency thanks to a state-of-engine the-art magnetic which is a hybrid between a electromagnet and a permanent magnet. The new motor, called SUMO, short for ?super motor,? is housed inside the rear wheel of the motorcycle. The manufacture says the new motor is seven times more cost effective than gas scooters. Daisuke Ito, a professional racer who test rode the EV-X7 prototype, said it could replace machines we now see in motor races. ?I just think that in the near future, we?ll see what kind of electric motorcycles that run throughout the city. And when that happens, conventional vehicles could disappear from motor racing, too, and competing well in vehicles Power. ? www.itnsource.com Reuters RTV521706

There is great connection between artificial sand and sand maker, the increasing demands for artificial sand will promotes the demands for sand maker. The frequently-used building materials in construction industry are gravel aggregate and cement. The artificial sand has been widely used in the concrete industry due to its good gradation. There are two kinds of sand making method up to now: dry type sand making and wet-type sand making. The dry type sand making method is proper for our country because water resource has been save to avoid the damage to ecological environment. Former South Carolina governor engaged

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford proposed marriage to his Argentine lover in the same way he has lived since their affair derailed his political career: combining elements of secrecy with unfiltered expressions of love, and a touch of the weird as well. Sanford confirmed Sunday that he's engaged to Maria Belen Chapur, an intensely private divorced woman whose affair with the married Republican father of four children became tabloid news three years ago.

He proposed to her on Wednesday in the Bella Italia Grille, a high-end restaurant in the upscale Palermo neighborhood, around the corner from Chapur's luxury apartment, the restaurant's manager said Sunday.

The couple have been regular customers at the restaurant, but this time they arrived separately. Sanford arrived first, and considered a table in the main dining room, but then turned it down as too noisy, said the restaurant manager, who gave his name only as Gustavo.

The manager said Sanford settled on a table for two near the door, and left the engagement ring in a small box with one of the waiters, telling him to give it to Chapur when she arrived. Then he hid out in the bathroom for disabled guests, where cracking open the door provides a direct view of the table, and waited for more than an hour before she finally arrived, the manager said.

The waiter then gave Chapur the box, telling her something about winning a prize. She opened it and seemed puzzled to see the ring until Sanford walked up, declared his love and asked her to marry him. She quickly said yes and they kissed and cried, but no one else in the restaurant seemed to notice, the manager said.

"We're very discreet. They are, too. Nobody noticed. They really are private people," said the manager, who declined to give his last name and said protecting his clients was paramount.

Sanford, who was South Carolina's governor from 2003-2011, had been a rising star in the Republican party with presidential aspirations when he disappeared from the state for five days in 2009. Reporters were told he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. But when he returned to South Carolina, Sanford admitted that he was instead in Argentina with Maria Belen Chapur, whom he later called his soul mate.

"I've been unfaithful to my wife. I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina. It began very innocently as I suspect many of these things do, in just a casual email back and forth in advice on one's life there and advice here. But here recently, over this last year, it developed into something much more than that," Sanford said then in explaining the affair.

Sanford's wife, Jenny, divorced him, and his political career was derailed. The affair also prompted impeachment hearings over Sanford's use of state planes, campaign cash and first-class travel. The former South Carolina congressman ended up paying $74,000 in ethics fines and reimbursed the state for the investigation and for travel and personal expenses.

While Sanford professed his love publicly for the woman in Argentina, Chapur never spoke out, issuing just one terse statement asking for privacy.

When asked about the engagement by The Associated Press on Sunday, Sanford simply vouched for the accuracy of a statement released earlier in the day.

"I'd love to talk but we're going to end up in no man's land," Sanford told the AP. "The only comment I'll stand by is that there was a statement sent to CNN and I stand by its accuracy. I don't know anything beyond that."

Clemens, 50, shines in comeback for Skeeters

Roger Clemens pitches for the Sugar Land Skeeters in the first inning against the Bridgeport Bluefish on Saturday. He struck out two batters and walked none in 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) - Roger Clemens raved about all the fun he had pitching at age 50 and putting smiles on the faces of Sugar Land baseball fans.

Still, it wasn't enough to set his mind on a major league comeback - at least not yet.

"No," Clemens said. "I've had success before at that level and other things. Again, it's a great deal of work and I'm not thinking that at this point."

Pitching for the first time in five years, Clemens tossed 3 1-3 scoreless innings Saturday night for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League.

He faced the Bridgeport Bluefish and struck out two, including former major leaguer Joey Gathright to start the game. He allowed one hit without a walk and threw 37 pitches.

Scouts from the Houston Astros and Kansas City Royals were on hand to see Clemens' comeback - for however long it lasts and wherever it leads.

"I think it will fuel that speculation," Royals pro scout Ron Toenjes said after watching the performance. "I just don't know what will happen. I don't think anyone does."

Clemens received a standing ovation when he left the game. He stopped to tip his cap to the overflow crowd of 7,724 before heading into the dugout to begin recuperating and see how his body responds to his big night.

Sugar Land manager Gary Gaetti, a two-time All-Star third baseman with the Minnesota Twins, said he was impressed by Clemens' outing after such a long layoff. He admitted before the game he was a bit concerned about how things would go because of Clemens' age and time off.

"He did a great job," Gaetti said. "He really did."

Tal Smith, a longtime Astros executive and currently a special adviser to the Skeeters, said Clemens had great command and that he believes he could pitch in the majors again.

The Rocket agreed to join the Skeeters on Monday after throwing a simulated game for team officials. He was still feeling the effects from that workout Saturday, and said he would have pushed back this start if he didn't have other commitments coming up in the next few days.

"I probably overextended myself a little bit," Clemens said, later adding that he'll be spending a lot of time icing his aging body in the upcoming days. "I wanted to see where I was at. Anytime you do these, they're fun but you don't want to go out and embarrass yourself or embarrass the club."

He didn't rule out the possibility of making another start for the Skeeters, and said he'd discuss it with Gaetti in the next few days.

"We'll visit and if we can do something special down the road, we'll do it again for some of the people that couldn't get here," Clemens said. "I'm definitely open to it if they want to do it. It was a great deal of fun for me now that it's over and I stayed healthy."

Clemens certainly was happy to be back on a diamond instead of in a courtroom. In June, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner was acquitted of charges he lied to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs.

Clemens, who last pitched for the New York Yankees in 2007, worked a 1-2-3 first inning and fanned two. His fastball was clocked at 88 mph, and he mixed in curves and splitters. He finished with four groundouts and four flyouts.

Toenjes liked what he saw.

"The thing that I was impressed with is you have a 50-year-old man out there throwing 87-88 (mph) most of the night, and he's got a real good splitter," he said. "His command wasn't as good as it could have been, but that it was a good, hard splitter, which is what you wanted to see."

Wearing the No. 21 that he sported during his rise to fame with Boston nearly three decades ago, Clemens got a big cheer when he took the mound.

After whiffing Gathright, Clemens retired Luis Figueroa on a grounder and struck out Prentice Redman to end the inning. The sellout crowd, with many fans wearing Skeeters T-shirts with Clemens' name on them, gave him another loud ovation.

Gathright thought Clemens would be more erratic.

"He didn't lose any command. Everything was pretty good for somebody that age," Gathright said.

Clemens didn't allow a hit until James Simmons' single with two outs in the second. He retired the next batter to end the eight-pitch inning.

Clemens has a bit of a belly that scores of 50-year-olds have, but he was effective enough against many hitters who were almost half his age.

He is set to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot going out to voters late this year. If he plays in a major league game this season, his consideration for Cooperstown would be pushed back five years.

Clemens, who wore gray cleats with bright yellow accents, needed 13 pitches to get through a perfect third inning. He threw one more pitch after that and Figueroa lined out to end Clemens' night with the Skeeters on top 1-0.

That was the final score, too.

After he left the game, Clemens stood along the railing of the dugout and chatted with his teammates, including fellow former major league pitcher Scott Kazmir and Jason Lane, who played with Clemens on Houston's 2005 World Series team.

Fans kept inching down near the dugout armed with phones, IPads and other cameras looking to snap a picture and collect a memory of the big night in this Houston suburb about 20 minutes from downtown.

Playing close to home, Clemens had a large group of friends and family among the crowd, including wife Debbie and sons Kacy and Kody.

Clemens earned about $160 million and won 354 games in a 24-year career with the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees and Astros. His 4,672 strikeouts are third-most and he was picked for 11 All-Star games.

Clemens has spent much of his time out of baseball defending his reputation.

He was accused by former personal trainer Brian McNamee in the Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball of using steroids and HGH, allegations Clemens denied before Congress. The Justice Department began an investigation into whether he had lied under oath, and in 2010 a grand jury indicted him on two counts of perjury, three counts of making false statements and one count of obstructing Congress.

He was acquitted of all the charges on June 19 after a 10-week trial and had largely stayed out of the public spotlight until now.

Many of his former teammates have said they believe that he could pitch again in the majors.

Clemens had two great seasons with the Astros after he turned 40, going 18-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 2004 to win his record seventh Cy Young Award. He was 13-8 with a career-low 1.87 ERA in 2005 while helping his hometown Astros reach their only World Series, and the team has already said it wouldn't rule out bringing him back this year.

On Saturday, he sounded as though he'd be more interested in joining fellow former Houston stars Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell in advising the players on what is the worst team in the majors right now than returning to play there himself.

"Where I can help, I'll do it," Clemens said. "I still think our hometown team, the Houston Astros, need some identity right now and I sure hope that Biggio and Bagwell come back if I'm running out there because they have a wealth of knowledge and they can help these young kids if they want to listen."
