Snowmobiler Caleb Moore in Critical Condition After Winter X Games Crash

Texas snowmobiler Caleb Moore remains in critical condition days after his snowmobile flipped on top of him in a violent crash?during competition at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo.

The Moore family today released a statement to ABC News through family spokeswoman Chelsea Lawson saying,??Caleb is in critical condition and is being closely monitored.?

?The Moores want to express their gratitude to all of Caleb?s fans, friends and family for their strong support and ask for continued prayers in the coming days,? the statement continued.

The 25-year-old medal-winning athlete from Krum, Texas, developed?complications in his heart and brain?after suffering an accident Thursday night during the Snowmobile Freestyle finals. Moore was?completing a?backflip when he came up short and the skis on his sled?slammed into the?landing, causing the 450-pound machine to flip end-over-end.

Moore?went?over the handlebars of the snowmobile and it came crashing down on top of him.?He tumbled down the slope for several feet before coming to a stop at the bottom, where he lay on the ground for a few minutes.

Moore eventually got up and walked off the course with help, but he was?rushed to Aspen Valley Hospital with a concussion, according to an X Games Medical report. While there, doctors?discovered bleeding around?Moore?s heart and he was?flown?to St. Mary?s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo.

St. Mary?s Hospital did not immediately respond to ABC News? request for comment.

Moore underwent emergency heart?surgery Friday and has since remained in intensive care. But on Sunday, the Moore family released a statement through ABC?s sister network ESPN saying, ?his cardiac injury has led to a secondary complication involving his brain.?

Moore?s younger brother Colten Moore, 23, also competed in the Snowmobile Freestyle finals and?crashed during the X Games competition. He was taken to the hospital with a separated?pelvis but?was released on Friday?and ?will not require surgery,??according to Lawson.

Both Moore brothers are decorated Winter X Games veterans, who made their debut in competitive snowmobiling in 2010 in Aspen after years of racing ATVs.

Caleb, who has three?Winter X Games medals,?took home?the?bronze medal in?Snowmobile Freestyle at last year?s games,?and?stood next to his brother?Colten on the podium,?who had?snagged gold.

ASUS and Google working on Nexus 7 successor, says DigiTimes

Supply chain rumormonger tips 1080p display, thinner bezel, same price point

The ASUS-made Nexus 7 has been a runaway success -- arguably the most successful Android tablet yet, and certainly the most popular Nexus device to date. So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to hear that a successor might be in the works, and due for launch later this year.

That's exactly what's being reported by Taiwanese outlet DigiTimes, which cites its sometimes right, sometimes wrong supply chain sources with access to "engineering samples" of the tablet. The site claims the ASUS-built Nexus 7 successor (Nexus 8, perhaps?) will feature a "full HD" 1080p display, thinner bezels and the same attractive $199-249 price point. "Several specifications" will also be upgraded, DigiTimes says, though no specifics are given.

The site's sources also estimate total Nexus 7 shipments at six million as of the end of January, with the $249 32GB Wifi-only version being the most popular at present.

This is the first we've heard of a possible Nexus 7 follow-up, but there's nothing terribly shocking in there as far as we're concerned. The Nexus 7's low price has been instrumental in its success, and so any successor was likely to be priced around the same level. In addition, with mobile device screen resolutions reaching dizzying heights this year, the Nexus tablet's screen is an obvious point for improvement.

Then again, given the patchy nature of supply chain rumblings, a large pinch of salt should be taken when dealing with this kind of rumor. Either way, we'll be on the ground in San Francisco in May to see what new hardware Google brings to this year's I/O conference.

Bill Ackman, the head of Pershing Square Capital Management and its $12 billion in assets, squared off against Carl Icahn, the fellow activist investor and one of the richest men in America with an estimated fortune of nearly $15 billion.

The debate revolved around charges and countercharges, with Icahn calling Ackman dishonest and "a major loser," while Ackman countered that Icahn is a bully "not used to someone standing up to him."

Traders at the New York Stock Exchange punctuated the air with "oohs" and "aahs" during the arguing, while social networks lit up, with financial journalists and market watchers tweeting and posting as fast as their fingers could type. (Read More:Ackman: Icahn Wanted to Be My Friend, I Said No)

The setting was during the final half-hour of CNBC's "Fast Money Halftime Report" with Scott Wapner, who found himself as much of the story as the two participants.

Icahn repeatedly berated Wapner. Icahn insisted he was the one being bullied and on several occasions used the word "bullsh--" to describe his feelings about the on-air forum.

"I've really sort of had it with this Ackman guy," Icahn said early on.

"Carl, you think I want to you invest with you?" Ackman charged later.

"I wouldn't invest with you if you were the last man on Earth!" Icahn bellowed in an exchange typical of the show's tenor.

At the core of the dispute was Icahn's furor with Ackman over the latter's short position on?Herbalife, the nutritional supplement and dietary product company that Ackman has called a pyramid scheme. (Read More:?Selling the American Dream, a CNBC Investigation)

In turn, Ackman released a statement Thursday that recalled a legal dispute between the two parties 10 years ago that resulted in Icahn having to pay Ackman's investors $4.5 million plus interest.

While each combatant scored style points during the battle, if the winner was to be declared from the performance of Herbalife, Icahn scored a clear victory.

The company's shares surged as much as $2.15 in the half-hour melee, though gains cooled afterwards.

From Ackman: "I was concerned about dealing with Carl Icahn, because Carl Icahn unfortunately does not have a good reputation for being a handshake guy."

Icahn: "He's the quintessential example that on Wall Street, if you want a friend, get a dog."

Ackman, again: "What I can tell you is, this is not an honest guy, and this is not a guy who keeps his word. This is a guy who takes advantage of little people."

And the Icahn counter: "I appreciate Bill that you called me a great investor. I thank you for that. Unfortunately I can't say the same for you."

Indeed, it was great theater.

Twitter lit up, with participants frantically posting updates.

"Move over Snooki and The Situation.. here comes CNBC's version of "Jerry Springer With Limos" (Hat tip Sir Arthur!!)," investor Doug Kass tweeted.

CNBC's own Jim Cramer, host of "Mad Money," wondered, "Whatever happened to the dignity of wealth!??"

And financial news site Business Insider simply labeled it "The Greatest Moment In Financial TV History."

FREE IS MY LIFE: MOVIE REVIEW: Quartet

This movie review for "Quartet" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

Quartet is Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut, so I had a feeling it was going to be good, as I love him as an actor and he's had a long and varied career. As a classical music fan, too, I very much enjoyed Quartet, although it definitely had some slow spots throughout.

Beecham House is home for retired musicians, all of whom love practicing their craft. The birthday of Verdi (a composer) is coming up, and the Beecham residents are preparing a big concert to celebrate. Reggie (Tom Courtenay), Wilf (Billy Connolly), and Cissy (Pauline Collins) are all opera singers who used to be very famous, actually, and they're shocked when they find out that a woman who was in their quartet, Jean (Maggie Smith), is going to be Beecham's newest resident. It's especially problematic for Reggie, who used to be married to Jean before she broke his heart many years ago. The director of the Verdi concert, though (Michael Gambon, aka Dumbledore from the Harry Potter films) knows that if they can get Jean to sing with them in their old quartet, it will draw in a huge crowd, and he pressures them to ask her, even though she's given up singing publicly.

This movie reminded me of Blue Lake, a fine arts camp I used to attend, except it was a retirement home! It looked like it would be really fun to live there, actually, aside from all the drama going on. My favorite character was actually Cissy, who is energetic and eternally optimistic; there's a scene between her and Maggie Smith where Maggie throws flowers at her that is hilarious, at least at first. Michael Gambon, missing his trademark Dumbledore beard but distinguishable by his voice and mannerisms, has a good part also, as the leader of putting together the Verdi concert, and the other two members of the quartet (Courtenay and Connolly) are great too.

Yes, see this movie. The only part that could have been better, like I mentioned before, was its slowness, but the film is humorous enough that it's easy to look past that. Kudos to Dustin Hoffman on a fantastic debut, and I hope to see more movies from him in the future.

Quartet is in theaters now and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 98 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.

The digital map is not the territory

WHEN Google Maps launched in 2005, the reaction in some quarters was puzzlement. Why was a search engine getting into cartography? The answer became apparent as it rapidly enhanced the service with navigation, Street View, local business listings and so on. Google doesn't just want to catalogue the online world; it wants to know where everything is in the physical world, too.

Eight years on, that goal looks within reach. Google and its competitors now offer maps of the depths of the oceans and the far side of the Moon. They help their users to navigate everywhere from side streets to shopping malls. And they have revolutionised the way we think about location - putting us, rather than some culturally significant but geographically arbitrary prime meridian, at the centre of the map (see "Uncharted territory: Where digital maps are leading us").

This innovation has made digital maps all but indispensable to millions of people. They provide an alternative view of the world: one that offers suggestions about directions and places. They are also becoming one of the primary tools for exploring the wealth of civic data now available about our surroundings, from crime statistics to traffic flows.

When the maps turn out to be wrong, though, we feel betrayed: witness the rare bloody nose dealt to Apple when it recently unveiled a buggy iPhone map app.

Such trust issues hint at bigger battles to come. Many of today's wondrous maps are powered by deep-pocketed companies, each claiming to offer the ultimate in verisimilitude. But many details of their construction are trade secrets. This matters because all maps have their quirks and biases. Consider the Mercator projection, breakthrough mapping of a different age: it helped make global exploration possible, but grossly distorts the land area of different countries.

More than 80 years ago, the philosopher Alfred Korzybski observed that "the map is not the territory". A representation of reality, no matter how faithful it may seem, is not the same thing as reality itself. We should be mindful of that distinction as digital mapping evolves.

Calif. couple sues over donations to Scientology

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Two former members of the Church of Scientology claimed in a lawsuit filed Wednesday that the church and its affiliates deceived members into donating millions of dollars to misrepresented causes.

Luis and Maria Garcia of Irvine, Calif., filed the complaint in federal court in Tampa, near the church's national headquarters in Clearwater. The couple claims they were duped into giving more than $420,000 for a building campaign, disaster relief efforts and other Scientology causes, only to find the bulk of the money went to inflate the church coffers and line the pockets of its leader, David Miscavige.

"The church, under the leadership of David Miscavige, has strayed from its founding principles," the lawsuit claims, "and morphed into a secular enterprise whose primary purpose is taking people's money."

In an emailed statement, Scientology spokeswoman Pat Harney said the church had not yet been served with the lawsuit, but challenged any contention that money was misappropriated.

"We understand from media inquiries this has something to do with fundraising and we can unequivocally state all funds solicited are used for the charitable and religious purposes for which they were donated," Harney said.

The Garcias were 28-year members of the church, rising to upper levels of Scientology. They left in November 2010 over their disenchantment with its direction under Miscavige, who has led the church since founder L. Ron Hubbard's death in 1986.

The lawsuit names various trusts and nonprofits linked to Scientology as defendants and says they collectively engage in fraud, unfair and deceptive trade practices and breach of contract in their fundraising.

Attorney Theodore Babbitt of West Palm Beach, who is among those handling the suit, said it would be followed by other similar claims from former Scientologists. He said the Garcias still believe in the precepts of Scientology and that the litigation is not a commentary on whether it is a true religion, a question that has dogged it across the world since it was founded in the 1950s. Babbitt said, ultimately, that question is irrelevant when considering its members' donations.

"Whether you're a church or not a church, you can't defraud people," he said.

Harney called the lawsuit "frivolous."

"The statements to the media made today about the church and its ecclesiastical leader by these bitter individuals are blatantly false," she said.

Among the accusations made in the lawsuit is that the Garcias and others were repeatedly approached with urgent requests for funding of Scientology work around the globe, such as disaster relief or campaigns for causes such as ending child pornography. Babbitt said high-ranking former Scientologists would testify that the church knowingly rerouted such collections for other spending, including financing a "lavish lifestyle" for Miscavige, stifling inquiries into church activities and finances, and intimidating members and ex-members.

A common tactic, Babbitt said, when a disaster unfolded somewhere in the world, would be to send a small group of Scientologists with a camera crew that would pay locals in the affected area to appear on camera. A scene would essentially be staged, he claims, in which people would be begging or appear to be starving, even if it weren't the case.

A cornerstone of church practice is personal counseling sessions, known as auditing, in which members disclose many facets of their personal lives. Babbitt says members' own financial status and the accounts they hold would be known from those sessions and then be used in tandem with footage from disaster sites in desperate and urgent pleas for money.

"There's an emergency, we need your money right now, we know that you have X dollars in the bank in Los Angeles," Babbitt said, offering a paraphrase of how a member might be approached.

In the end, little if any of the money collected for such causes reached its intended place, he said. Those contributions, the lawsuit claims, were collected by a Scientology-linked group called IAS Administrations, which Babbitt says former church members will testify accumulated more than $1 billion in contributions.

The Garcias also claim to have prepaid for auditing and training services that were never provided and for which a refund has never been received, and to have given about $340,000 for the church's planned Super Power building for high-level coursework.

Life-Changing Books

Have you ever read a book that, for one reason or another, significantly changed how you view the world?

Mine was Asimov's Foundation Trilogy (I refuse to admit that there are more than three Foundation novels). I'd just finished reading the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and here was a trilogy that gave a science-fictionalized account of that period of history.

Psychohistory, the keystone of the novels, is tempting, as well. The idea of using math and psychology to predict the future of a civilization is appealing, although probably impossible.

Soul-searching in focus as GOP gathers in NC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Republican soul-searching begins in earnest this week as GOP officials from every state in the nation come together for the first time since their party's November shellacking.

There is broad agreement that the Republican Party needs to undergo fundamental changes to remain competitive as surging minority populations re-shape the American electorate. But there is no clear path forward. And even as they gather in a Charlotte, N.C., hotel this week ? just days after President Barack Obama began his second term ? Republicans are in some ways as divided as ever.

Facing his first re-election test later in the week, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Preibus is under intense pressure to improve the Republican brand to attract more women and Hispanics, while not upsetting the hard-line conservatives who represent his party's most passionate voters.

"They're really going to have to do full throttle self-examination. They have alienated so many people who are Republicans," said Olympia Snowe, a three-term Republican senator who retired last year, in part because of her party's shift to the right. "It's going to be a mighty challenge. The party's gone astray."

Indeed, the formal theme of the Republican National Committee's winter meeting ? "Renew, Grow, Win" ? reflects an understanding from party officials that the GOP must grow to survive. In particular, this week's meeting will focus on the need to abandon harsh rhetoric on illegal immigration, women's issues and the social safety net, rhetoric that helped drive moderate voters and minorities toward Democrats last fall.

"We need to renew our values, renew our party, renew what we stand for," RNC spokesman Sean Spicer said.

The push to broaden the party's message is the focus, but not the only business on the agenda for the three-day meeting in North Carolina, a presidential swing state where Democrats hosted their national convention last summer.

Republicans from across the nation will decide Friday whether Priebus deserves a second term after his party lost an opportunity to win the White House and add Senate seats under what appeared to be favorable political conditions. The 40-year-old Wisconsin native is widely expected to win re-election, despite a challenge from Maine National Committeeman Mark Willis, a former Ron Paul supporter who led a brief revolt at the party's national convention last year in Tampa, Fla.

Willis said Wednesday that he did not have the backing of three states needed to ensure a spot on the ballot with Priebus. He acknowledged that he would not likely defeat the sitting chairman even if he qualifies for the ballot. But he and others lashed out at party leaders, saying they were marginalizing grassroots supporters who favored presidential candidates like Paul, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann or Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who is thought to have interest in a 2016 presidential bid.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a conservative favorite, is attending the meeting in an unofficial capacity. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who has been mentioned as a possible 2016 presidential candidate, will deliver a keynote address Thursday night.

Ongoing discussions are expected to swirl about the 2016 presidential voting calendar, which sets the first contests for Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada. While no shifts are expected this week, some party officials have grown increasingly concerned about Iowa's role after its last presidential caucus.

The results were confusing at best. Mitt Romney, who eventually won the nomination, was initially declared the caucus winner by the Iowa GOP. A subsequent tally, however, suggested that Santorum actually won by a handful of votes.

Some Republicans complain that Iowa's socially conservative voters tend to support candidates that represent ideological extremes. Santorum's candidacy was driven in large part by his opposition to abortion rights and gay marriage. Four years earlier, Iowa Republicans favored Mike Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor and ordained Baptist minister who went on to win just a handful of states.

"I think Iowa is where all eyes are focused," said veteran GOP operative Phil Musser.

But Republicans far from Iowa also hurt their cause in the last election cycle.

Romney helped alienate many Hispanic voters by highlighting his support for a fence along the Mexican border and "self-deportation" of illegal immigrants. Down-ticket Republican candidates alienated female voters by backing new abortion laws in a handful of swing states like Virginia and New Hampshire, while Senate candidate Todd Akin of Missouri hurt himself and his party by declaring that women's bodies could prevent pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."

Exit polls make clear that Republicans face an uphill battle if they hope to repair their image.

Obama dramatically outperformed Romney among Hispanics last fall, winning 71 percent of the growing demographic compared to Romney's 27 percent. That was the GOP's worst showing among Hispanics since 1996, according to exit polling collected by The Associated Press. It was worse among black voters, who supported Obama over Romney 93 percent to 6 percent.

The disparity is less acute among women ? Obama captured 53 percent of the female vote ? although two decades have passed since a Republican presidential candidate last hit the 50-percent mark with women.

This week marks the beginning of a substantive discussion, but Priebus has outlined plans to release a "Growth and Opportunity Effort" later in the spring that offers specific paths forward.

It's unlikely to satisfy everyone.

"There's too many people that are either in the Republican Party wondering why they are in the Republican Party because they feel like the party isn't representing them any longer," said Nevada Republican national committeewoman Diana Orrock, a former Paul supporter who worries that grassroots supporters are being taken for granted. "Or we have people who have left the Republican Party and aren't getting a clear message as to why they should come back into the fold."

"We're losing elections," she said. "Something has to change."

Last time Apple bragged about the number of iOS devices it's sold, the number was 400 million. On the company earnings call today, however, Tim Cook revealed that the number of iPhones, iPads and iPods sold has surpassed the half a billion mark. To be clear, that's over 500,000,000 devices, and it means that Apple's moved a hundred million devices total since June 2012. Of those, 75 million were moved in this quarter alone. Not bad, eh?
