Furniture and Decoration? Blog Archive ? Basement Waterproofing ...

Is your basement one of the most neglected sections of your home? You are not alone in this. Many homeowners in the US do not even realize what a treasure trove they are sitting on. The wastage is even more readily apparent if you live in Washington DC area, where houses are typically larger than in other regions in the US. Basement waterproofing in Washington DC can help you reclaim a lot of space that you can use for a wide variety of purposes. Whether you need to stow away additional furniture, build a personalized man cave for yourself, or simply need additional living space, a well-maintained basement can be a true asset for you.

However, basement waterproofing is a challenging task, and if you do not have any prior experience of carrying out tasks of this kind, then you should definitely enlist the services of a professional. Here are some tasks that you need to ask the professional to carry out:

]]>

1. The rainwater collected on your roof always travels down to basement through gutters and downspouts. In some cases, this water may collect at certain spots right outside your foundation, causing dampness through the basement. Ideally, the gutters should deposit the water at least 5 feet away from the foundation of your home.

2. Do you have a garden, or have shrubs and trees growing too close to the foundation of your home? Watch out, those roots can burrow under the foundation, creating pathways for water to get collected right under your basement. Ideally, plants should be growing at least a foot away from the foundation.

3. This is a no-brainer, but you should make sure the professional does this anyway. Cracks are sure shot ways of inviting lots and lots of moisture in your basement, so you should get those filled up with waterproofing materials that naturally absorb moisture.

4. If you already have a lot of water seeping into your basement, then waterproofing alone may not solve the problem. What you need is a sump installed in your basement, preferably at the lowest point, where water naturally flows to and collects.

LendingTree.com Shares How Refinancing Your Auto Loan Can ...

Charlotte, NC February 8, 2007

People usually do not think twice about refinancing a home loan to save money. But fewer people think to 0refinance their auto loan if they?re unhappy with it.

An auto refinance loan ? just like a mortgage refinance ? can end up saving you money by possibly providing you a better interest rate and lower monthly payments. Most people end up financing their auto loan through the dealership. While convenient for buyers who don?t want to have to delay their purchase, keep in mind that car dealers don?t always offer the best financing deals.

When an auto loan is refinanced, it simply means that a new lender pays off the old loan. The title is then transferred to the new lender and your payments are made to that new lender. Sounds simple, right?

LendingTree.com offers up the following advice on how to refinance an auto loan:

To refinance an auto loan:

1. Research lenders who can provide you with the best auto refinance loan. A web site like ww.LendingTree.com can give you access to offers from several lenders and save you the time and legwork of having to contact various lenders yourself.

2. Provide the lender who gives you the best nterest rate with all of the financial information they?ll need to qualify you for the refinance loan.

3. Pay any fees that may be associated with the refinance loan. These may include nominal lien holder or pre-payment fees.

4. Once you?re approved, your new lender will pay off your old loan and assume the car?s title.

Few Treatments for Wrist Pain

Wrist Pain: Our hands, by design, were not intended for weight bearing, so it?s no wonder that many of us experience pain or discomfort when assuming those Pilates or yoga positions that require us to do just that -bear body weight on our hands. Discomfort may simply be a result of mild limitations in wrist range of motion, improper alignment of shoulders, arms and hands or reduced core and arm strength. Gentle and gradual stretching and strengthening exercises, along with proper body alignment and weight distribution may reduce your wrist discomfort in weight bearing positions. However, for some of us, even with good strength and proper form wrist pain persists. A close look at the anatomy of the hand reveals why.

Hand Anatomy: The hand is designed more for mobility than stability. It is composed of 27 small bones, muscles and ligaments that allow for a large amount of movement and dexterity, enabling us to perform a multitude of daily activities requiring fine precision and coordination. The two bones of the lower arm, the radius and ulna, meet at the carpal bones of the hand to form the wrist. Unlike the foot the hand does not have a large bone cushioned with a fat pad for bearing weight, but has small bones surrounded by soft tissue, including the nerve and blood supply. The median nerve crosses the wrist through the carpal tunnel. These soft tissues of the wrist, including the ligaments and tendons, are subject to strain when we are weight bearing on a fully extended wrist such as in a push-up position.

The Culprits: As a simplification, the common causes of wrist pain are grouped into 4 categories:

  1. Overuse: too much repetitive movement or joint impact
  2. Injury: wrist fractures, strains & sprains
  3. Lack of conditioning: weak muscles, poor range of motion, improper form
  4. Aging or Disease: arthritic changes in the joints, inflammation, diabetes etc.

Which category does your wrist pain originate from?

Overuse: One common cause of wrist pain is Overuse, clinically known as RSI ? Repetitive Stress (or Strain) Injury. Long periods performing the same movements, such as typing on a computer, playing a musical instrument or doing sun salutations, can lead to RSI. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) a leading cause of wrist pain is grouped in the RSI category.

What do you do about RSI?

An important first step in treating an overuse injury is to rest ? stop doing what is causing you pain to allow healing time. The reality, however, is that many of our repetitive movements are related to our livelihood such as data input, graphic design, dental hygiene, massage therapist or fitness instructor, so to stop completely might result in a few bounced checks. If complete rest isn?t an option, two ways to decrease repetitive joint stress are through task and schedule modification.

Suggestion One: Modify Your Activity

Once you?ve identified the specific task(s) that?s aggravating your wrists (or other joints) look at how frequently or for what duration you?re performing this task.

Modify your Schedule: The objective of modifying your schedule is to reduce how often and how long you spend doing the pain inducing task. Urgent deadlines, productivity ratings or financial stress are real factors that contribute to overuse injuries. Many smart industries have implemented job rotation and other programs to reduce RSI in the workplace, thus saving money on workman?s compensation claims and lost productivity. Practical examples for modifying your schedule may include:

1) Part Time Work: a schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Friday will allow a day of rest in between.

2) Plan Ahead: instead of spending 6 hours banging out a report on the computer spread it out over 4 days for 1 ? hour each day.

3) Set Time Limits: Break up the problem task into shorter time segments with rest and stretch breaks built into your day.

4) Job Sharing / Rotation: Can you recruit a co-worker to assist you or swap tasks with? Look at all options for creative scheduling.

Modify the Task: The objective here is to use an alternate method to accomplish the task, which may require a different set of muscles or reduce muscle tension and joint stress.

1) Change the Method: If you?re a fitness instructor with a wrist injury, give verbal directions instead of demonstrations. If you spend your day on the computer consciously reduce keyboard time by limiting your email correspondence ? pick up the phone and make a quick call instead.

2) Change or Modify the Tool: Examples include using a track ball instead of a mouse, substitute an electric tool for a hand tool and increasing the diameter of the tool to open the grasp of the fingers and thumb.

3) Modify your Body Position: Use an ergonomic keyboard, set up your ?work station? optimally for your body and alternate standing with sitting.

4) Use your non-dominant hand: If your wrist pain is primarily in your dominant hand try to develop the skill to accomplish the task with your non-dominant hand. Start with something simple like stirring while cooking or dialing the phone then work towards using your computer mouse with your opposing hand. This may be challenging but is very useful and good for your coordination.

Suggestion Two: Incorporate frequent stretch breaks into your day.

Whether it?s an occupation or leisure pursuit that?s resulting in RSI, do strengthening and stretches that move your body, limbs and joints in the opposite direction of the repetitive motions you?re engaged in. Computer use is a big culprit of wrist pain, since many people now spend hours of their day at a keyboard and monitor. The typical computer posture takes its toll on your back, neck, arms and hands -possibly resulting in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Break up long hours at the computer by scheduling intermittent breaks to stand up, move around and stretch. Do these simple stretches several times a day in standing or from the comfort of your chair.

Hold each stretch for 3 to 5 deep breaths:

1) Stretch shoulder and arms: Reach back from the shoulder rotating the spine, straighten your elbow and rotate your palm up, extend the wrist slightly or keep neutral then straighten and spread the fingers apart. Deepen the stretch by rotating the neck so your face is turned away from your stretched arm. Repeat with the other arm.

2) Rotate both wrists several times clockwise then counter clockwise.

3) Stretch finger flexors: Extend fingers and place them together in a prayer position. Press fingers firmly together and spread them apart keeping fingers straight. To increase the stretch, gently pull the wrists apart 1 or 2 inches while keeping fingers together.

4) Stretch wrist in extension: Continue in prayer position with fingers and wrists pressed together. Start with your finger tips at your chin, and then slowly slide hands down towards your waist keeping the wrists pressed together. Go as far as you can comfortably & hold stretch for several breaths. If you feel discomfort in your thumbs simply cross them on top each other instead of pressing together.

5) Stretch wrist in flexion: Flip your hands over so the backs of your hands and fingers are touching and pointing down. Start with your hands at your waist and move slowly up to chest height keeping the backs of the hands pressed together. Fingers dangle loosely while the top of the wrist joints are stretched.

6) Gently shake shoulders, arms, wrists and fingers.

This series of stretches, each held for 5 deep breaths, only take a total of 3 minutes to do! A simple and healthy way to incorporate this routine into your day is to drink lots of water. Every time you get up for a bathroom break, do your stretches before resuming work.

Recap

Is wrist pain interfering with your fitness pursuits, work or life? If so, what?s the culprit? Too much keyboarding, weight bearing on your hands or other repetitive activity may be an underlying cause of your wrist pain. If you have an overuse injury ? first try to rest! Next modify the activity through creative scheduling and use of alternative methods, tools or props. It?s also important to develop a stretching & strengthening program to counteract the negative effects of repetitive movements on muscles and joints. Our bodies were designed to move in a multitude of directions, so mix it up and bring some balance and variety into your weekly routine. You know what they say?Variety is the Spice of Life!

Disclaimer: If you have significant wrist pain resulting from a more serious issue such as joint inflammation, arthritis, carpel tunnel syndrome, previous fractures or surgeries of the wrist, it is essential that you consult your health care practitioner prior to beginning a wrist exercise program, Pilates or yoga practice.

Paula Wilbert, Occupational Therapist and Joint Protection Products founder, developed Wrist Assured Gloves (WAGs) to solve a personal wrist injury. The wrist pain she experienced after landing on both hands while playing soccer with her 6 year old son, interfered with her Pilates and yoga practice, so she instinctively tapped 25 years as an occupational therapist to create WAGs.

Paula knew that if she could find a way to keep her wrists from fully extending she would be able to move easily into yoga and Pilates poses, such as chatturanga and side plank, without experiencing intense wrist pain. The contoured, wedged gel pad she invented does just that. Firm, yet comfortable, the gel pads sewn into sporty machine washable gloves and are a practical solution to a common problem. US and Foreign Patents are pending. WAGs are available at http://www.getwags.com

Sound Sends Electron To Specific Location

60-Second Science | Technology

Sound impelled an electron in an energy-well to a second energy-well and back. It's a step toward controlled single-electron transfer for use in quantum computer electronic circuits. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

The shortest distance between two points may be a straight line, but try telling that to electrons: when current flows down a wire, these particles zig and zag, moving indirectly from one end to the other. But now researchers have sped single electrons straight to their destinations using sound. The work is in the journal Nature. [Rob McNeil et al, On-demand single-electron transfer between distant quantum dots]

An electron?s quantum state carries information, making it important for a viable quantum computer. As the particle staggers down a wire, however, its state loses coherence?the electron ?forgets? the information it carried.

To make it travel more efficiently, researchers blasted a short burst of sound at an electron trapped in an energy-well. The sound wave ?lifted? the electron, speeding it directly towards an empty well. Once it reached its destination, a sound burst from the opposite direction sent the electron back to its original location.

This discovery is a stop toward quantum computing, which requires the controlled transfer of single electrons. But it could also have another application: electron ping-pong. Researchers have bounced an electron back and forth up to 60 times. Nice nano-rally.

Alien extreme weather, nature vs. nurture in stars and more in this week?s news

Web edition : Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Extreme weather on a brown dwarf
Severe weather may be common in the solar system ? think Jupiter?s Great Red Spot, a raging, enormous thunderstorm on Saturn, tornadoes and hurricanes on Earth ? but until recently, astronomers had spotted few storms beyond the solar system. Now, a team led by researchers at the University of Toronto describes a gigantic storm clouding the skies of the brown dwarf 2MASS J21392676+0220226, about 40 light-years away. ?The astronomers reported September 12 at the Extreme Solar Systems II meeting in Moran, Wyoming that the failed star?s brightness fluctuated by as much as 30 percent, which could be due to extreme variations in its atmosphere and cloud cover.? ?Nadia Drake

Stars? weight is fate
When it comes to stars, birth weight is almost entirely nature, not nurture, claims Mark Krumholz of the University of California, Santa Cruz. The mass a star ends up with has very little to do with the environment it?s born in. Instead, weight gain depends on things like how much heat is given off by infalling gas, which in turn affects how much gas is available for grabbing. Ultimately it?s the onset and properties of nuclear fusion inside stellar embryos? cores that stops the gas grab and limits sizes. Surprisingly, this halt has very little to do with things like the pressure and elemental composition of the cocoon surrounding the protostar, Krumholz writes in an upcoming Astrophysical Journal. ?Camille M. Carlisle

Baby galaxies with big black holes
Even little galaxies might sport some heavy-duty hardware. An international team of astronomers has determined that the glowing centers in some low-mass, ?dwarf? galaxies in the distant universe are powered by supermassive black holes, previously observed churning away only at the centers of large galaxies. Using the Hubble Space Telescope, the researchers peered at galaxies from the universe?s teenage years. There, they found evidence for lurking, low-luminosity supermassive black holes in the centers of small galaxies. The finding challenges theories linking galactic evolution and supermassive black hole formation, the team reports in a paper to appear in the Astrophysical Journal.? ?Nadia Drake

AP Interview: Tunisia ready for elections (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Tunisia's foreign minister said Tuesday his government is ready for Oct. 23 elections, the first since a rebellion overthrew the country's longtime dictator sparking an unprecedented wave of pro-democracy uprisings across the Arab world.

Mouldi Kefi expressed hope in an Associated Press interview that Tunisians anxious for democracy would put aside their "egocentric" demands, protests and strikes and focus on the best interests of the country.

Tunisians launched the Arab Spring uprisings against autocratic rulers when they toppled President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January ? and they will be the first to hold elections where more than 100 parties will be contesting seats in parliament.

The elections "will be really a landmark in the modern history of Tunisia" and will mark a return "almost to our roots," Kefi said, because one of the first constitutions to be signed in history was in Carthage, about 2,000 years ago, and one of the first constitutions in the Mediterranean region was also signed in the country in 1865.

While there are security concerns, he said, the government is counting on "the wisdom of the Tunisian people" for a smooth political transition not only for the country, but for the international community which will be watching the results of the first elections resulting from this year's Arab Spring.

"It (is) probably going to be a bellwether model for the others if the Tunisian experience takes root and succeeds," he said.

But Kefi stressed that all revolutions have ups and downs.

"It's not only honey, butter and milk. It is tears and blood, and we went through difficult times," he said.

Because strikes and unrest have continued in some parts of Tunisia, the government was forced to reintroduce emergency laws that the ousted regime had relied on, he said.

But Kefi quickly added that the demonstrations and strikes have eased in the past three weeks and "the situation (is) stabilizing and calming down."

"With the elections approaching ... the Tunisian people are beginning to put Tunisia's broader interests above (their) selfish or narrow interests," he said.

Kefi said the government has worked hard to prepare for the elections and has done its "homework," including preparing voter lists, and reaching out to many in the international community, in eastern Europe and elsewhere, for advice.

Campaigning is slated to begin Oct. 1 and there are over 100 parties, he said, but roughly half are smaller parties that have formed coalitions, and about 40 percent of the candidates are independents.

In the wide-ranging interview, Kefi said he was confident that Libya's National Transitional Council would work hard to ensure that the unrest there would not spill across the border to his country.

"The destinies of the two people ... are interconnected, intertwined," he said, pointing to strong cultural and geographic ties and to the welcome that Tunisians gave the 650,000 Libyans who crossed the border to flee the fighting.

Kefi expressed hope that the remnants of forces loyal to ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi "are going to be dealt with" in "a matter of days or weeks."

"I'm sure that tomorrow, the two peoples are going to work hand in hand for reconstruction of Libya," he said.

Kefi appealed for international help to help Tunisia deal with a host of challenges.

The first challenge, he said, is to ensure that the Oct. 23 elections "will put Tunisia on the path for democracy to which we all aspire."

Tunisia also needs to kick-start its economy which, like Egypt's, was ravaged in the wake of the uprising.

Kefi said that it would be "a very big accomplishment" if economic growth hit 1 percent this year. He said the government was hoping for a recovery to about 3 percent GDP growth in 2012, and about 5 percent the following year.

The third challenge, he said, is finding jobs for 7 million unemployed people, including 150,000 with advanced degrees.

The Standard SUV Driving | Automotive Blog

The differences between the SUV and crossover utility vehicles starting with the traditional design of the first car of each vehicle. Using traditional SUV body-on-frame vehicle technology, the body separately and then integrated with a steel frame sub-floor that will support the drive train added. Because of this construction offers standard sport utility vehicles more protection in an accident as a crossover SUV, where construction is not the body-on-frame.

Traditional SUVs are generally less expensive to repair as a crossover sport utility vehicles because the structure allows a damaged part to be removed and a new section added in its place. Traditional SUVs are generally four-wheel drive and can tow loads as heavy as 7000 pounds, but the reduction in consumption of electricity consumption. A traditional sport utility vehicles can run on gasoline consumption as low as eight or nine miles per gallon to produce. The standard SUV driving over rough terrain with relative ease.

Operating a traditional sport utility vehicle is similar to the handling of a truck, the driver can be a challenge. In a crossover SUV, the driver of the car seems to be an extension of himself, it will be in better handling and performance.

Unlike standard SUV, a crossover SUV is built with a platform and monocoque car. The metal chassis that the structures of the body and the structure that supports the vehicle are the same object, a structure that serves two purposes. This also means that the crossover is likely to receive more irreparable damage to a traditional SUV in the case of a collision.

Compensation for damage to a crossover SUV can also be more expensive than a standard SUV, by comparison, because the body of the vehicle and cross the platform, the same physical structure as the body on frame SUV traditional opposed. Damaged parts can not be easily removed from the vehicle and replaced, as with the standard sport utility vehicle, crossover vehicle, the car-based framework should be cut and welded together again. The crossover SUV, the frame is much lighter than the truck platform of a traditional SUV, used to improve performance of fuel economy, because it requires less power.

A crossover SUV is about 17 miles per gallon on average, with some crossover vehicles with no less than 23 miles per gallon or more. There are several ways to select the crossover category. The crossover sport utility vehicle includes anti-lock braking, navigation and transmission 5-speed automatic or manual.

Traditional SUV is an elegant alternative to a full-size truck with improved passenger and cargo space, but they retain the power of a normal truck. Crossover imitate the style and design of traditional sport utility vehicles, however, a crossover turn improved and more energy efficient, in exchange for the performance and life of the standard SUV.

Facebook?s New Timeline and How to Activate it Now

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: inklingmedia.net --- Saturday, September 24, 2011
Tweet Image via CrunchBase This past week Facebook rolled out a bunch of news features. Early in the week it was the new newsfeed and user interface, which was met with mixed reviews . I happen to like the changes, and while they are ?different?, they are an improvement. They just take some getting used to. My favorite part is that you gain much more control over what you see and what you share, in an easier to modify interface. Then on Thursday they introduced a number of other new features, the biggest of which is the new Timeline profile feature. I took the liberty of activating it on Friday, and like most of my friends, I absolutely love it. It doesn?t change your home page/newsfeed, only your profile. This is Facebook?s official video showing you what it looks like: While they?ll be rolling it out to everyone eventually, you can actually go through a few steps to activate it now. I suggest you do this, so you can play around and get used to things, but it?s incredible how easily you can go back and see your life since you?ve been on Facebook. I joined almost exactly five years ago, and it was like going through an old yearbook or photo album. Lots of fun. This video tutorial will show you how you can activate it now: ? ? And finally, this video will walk you through how to customize your new profile: ? ? Enjoy and have fun! Make Yourself One of Leading Food Products Exporters of India ...

September 24th, 2011 by twiject.com Leave a reply ?

What inference can you draw from here? The condition and prospect of food products exporters of India seem to be optimistic. Now the question remains of the food products enjoying a major clout at the moment. Without a doubt the first and foremost of these happen to be rice.

Have you got amazed hearing the name of rice? If you have in reality, it does denote your ignorance only. Rice, if truth be told, happens to be one of the most vital food crops in India and as per some Indian states, it happens to be staple. Rice, according to government records, makes up almost half of the whole production of food grain and cereal in the nation. If you have formed a new company and want to be one of the leading food products exporters very soon, there is a need to go through the following lines carefully. But at the same time, you have got to be knowledgeable enough of food products manufacturers in India, food import export, in conjunction with imported food products to India. All these and their changing aspects do influence a business to a large extent.

Now it must also be taken into account that rice in the Indian scenario is not of a single type but does contain lots of varieties. It happens to be one of the key rice exporting country in the globe. But among all forms of rice Basmati deserve special mention, enjoys a great demand throughout the planet. Keep in mind that you can include yourself among leading food products exporters in the market provided that you deal Basmati rice. It must be stated that (at one fell swoop) that just being born with a few particular traits does not make anyone triumphant. There is the need of meticulous attention in addition. This is done by the leading rice exporters (key food products manufacturers in India).

Take Rajdhani for instance. It is celebrated company in the middle of rice exporters hailing from India and does transform rice into most appreciated and preferred product across the globe. What makes them so flourishing? The group leaves no stone unturned to make the entire saga a complete success and is found to capitalize on most up-to-date packaging techniques along with hygienic packing. This makes them more appreciable. Taking cure from the same, more and more food products exporters are found to make use of most up-to-date packaging techniques along with hygienic packing. Take all said factors into consideration, if you want to succeed.

Saturn's Rings & 5 Moons Shine Together in Spectacular New Photo (SPACE.com)

A stunning new photo from NASA's Cassini spacecraft shows five moons of Saturn hovering around two of the gas giant planet's dazzling rings.

The image, which NASA released Wednesday (Sept. 21), shows Saturn's moons Janus, Pandora, Enceladus, Mimas and Rhea. The planet's rings are beyond Rhea and Mimas, while bright Enceladus appears behind the rings. Cassini took the picture in visible green light on July 29, 2011. [See the amazing photo of Saturn's rings and moons]

The view looks toward the northern, sunlit side of the rings from just above the ringplane, researchers explained in a description.

The five Saturn moons in Cassini's photo vary greatly in size, with Pandora (50 miles wide, or 81 kilometers) and Janus (111 miles, or 179 km) the smallest. The "Death Star moon" Mimas measures 246 miles (396 km) across and Enceladus is 313 miles (504 km) wide. Rhea is Saturn's second-largest moon, at 949 miles (1,528 km) across.

In the image, Pandora appears near the center of the frame between Saturn's A ring and the thin F ring.

The Cassini spacecraft was closest to Rhea when it snapped the photo ? about 684,000 miles (1.1 million km), researchers said. The spacecraft was 1.1 million miles (1.8 million km) from Enceladus, a frozen world that spouts water-ice geysers into space.

Saturn has more than 60 known moons. The largest, Titan, is about 3,200 miles (5,150 km) wide, making it nearly 50 percent bigger than Earth's moon. [Photos: The Rings and Moons of Saturn]

NASA launched Cassini toward Saturn in 1997, and the spacecraft arrived at the ringed planet in 2004. Cassini has been circling the planet to study its rings and moons ever since. Cassini also carried the European Huygens lander, which touched down on Titan in 2005.?

Cassini's mission was originally slated to end in 2008, but NASA has extended the Saturn flight twice, most recently until 2017. The Cassini mission is a cooperative effort by NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian space agency.

JACKSON, Ga. (AP) ? Troy Davis supporters in the U.S. and Europe were trying just about anything to spare him from lethal injection that was just hours away Wednesday for killing an off-duty Georgia policeman, a crime he and others have insisted for years that he did not commit.

Supporters planned vigils around the world. They'll be outside Georgia's death row prison in Jackson and at U.S. embassies in Europe.

Turned down this week by Georgia's parole board, the 42-year-old's last, slim chance for reprieve is through the courts, and his lawyers are trying. His backers have tried increasingly frenzied measures: offering for Davis to take a polygraph test, urging prison workers to strike or call in sick, posting a judge's phone number online, urging people to call and ask him to put a stop to the 7 p.m. execution. They've even considered a desperate appeal for White House intervention.

"We're trying everything we can do, everything under the law," said Chester Dunham, a civil rights activist and talk show host protesting in Savannah, where in 1989, prosecutors say Davis fatally shot 27-year-old Mark MacPhail.

Davis' supporters include former President Jimmy Carter, Pope Benedict XVI and a former FBI director, the NAACP, as well as conservative figures. The U.S. Supreme Court even gave him an unusual opportunity to prove his innocence last year, but ultimately didn't hear the merits of the case.

Several witnesses have recanted their accounts that it was Davis who pulled the trigger, and some jurors have said they've changed their minds about his guilt. Still, prosecutors and MacPhail's family have staunchly backed the verdict and state and federal courts have repeatedly upheld his conviction.

MacPhail was working security at a bus station on Aug. 19, 1989, and rushed to the aid of Larry Young, a homeless man who prosecutors say Davis was bashing with a handgun after asking him for a beer. When MacPhail got there, they say Davis had a smirk on his face as he shot the officer to death in a Burger King parking lot. Others have claimed the man with Davis that night has told people he actually shot the officer.

No gun was ever found, but shell casings were linked, prosecutors say, to an earlier shooting for which Davis was convicted. Witnesses placed Davis at the crime scene and identified him as the shooter. However, no other physical evidence was found, including blood or DNA, that tied Davis to the crime.

As time ticked toward the execution, an upbeat and prayerful Davis turned down an offer for a special last meal and planned to spend his final hours meeting with friends, family and supporters. Meanwhile, two attempts to prove his innocence were rejected: a polygraph test and another hearing before the pardons board. The governor does not have the power to stop it.

Davis' attorney Stephen Marsh said Davis would only submit to a polygraph test if pardons officials would take it seriously.

"He doesn't want to spend three hours away from his family on what could be the last day of his life if it won't make any difference," Marsh said.

His lawyers, meanwhile, are trying the legal avenues left to them. They filed a motion in a county court challenging the ballistics evidence and eyewitness testimony, which the state attorney general has asked to be rejected. A judge could at least delay the execution, which has happened three times before. Most believe arguments on the merits of the case have been exhausted, however.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which has helped lead the charge to stop the execution, said it was considering asking President Barack Obama to intervene. Obama cannot grant Davis clemency since it was a state conviction, but could potentially halt the execution by asking for an investigation into a federal issue if one exists, though that was unlikely, said Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center.

In Savannah, 16 Davis supporters gathered at the Chatham County courthouse to press District Attorney Larry Chisolm to help stop Davis' execution. They said 240,000 people had signed petitions urging the state to spare Davis' life, and delivered them in three large boxes to Chisolm's courthouse office where they were received by a member of the prosecutor's staff. Chisolm has said he's powerless to intervene, but activists say they believe he has enough influence as district attorney to sway the outcome.

At the prison in Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton was there as he has been through the fight to save Davis.

"I came here last time, in 2008, prepared to comfort his mother, and it ended up that we got a reprieve," Sharpton said. "I don't know if we're going to get a miracle today but I promised Troy I would fight to the end and even beyond, and I'm here to keep my promise."

As for the new and changed accounts by some witnesses, an unmoved federal judge dismissed them during a hearing set up by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2010. He said while the "new evidence casts some additional, minimal doubt on his conviction, it is largely smoke and mirrors."

It was the first time in 50 years that justices had considered a request to grant a new trial for a death row inmate. It set a tough standard for Davis to exonerate himself, ruling his attorneys must "clearly establish" Davis' innocence ? a higher bar to meet than prosecutors having to prove guilt.

Once the hearing judge made his ruling, the justices didn't take up the case.

Prosecutors say they have no doubt they charged the right person, and MacPhail's family lobbied the pardons board Monday to reject Davis' clemency appeal. The board refused to stop the execution a day later.

"He has had ample time to prove his innocence," said MacPhail's widow, Joan MacPhail-Harris. "And he is not innocent."

In Europe, where the planned execution has drawn widespread criticism, politicians and activists were making a last-minute appeal to the state of Georgia to refrain from executing Davis. Amnesty International and other groups planned a protest outside the U.S. Embassy in Paris later Wednesday and Amnesty also called a vigil outside the U.S. Embassy in London.

Parliamentarians and government ministers from the Council of Europe, the continent's human rights watchdog, called for Davis' sentence to be commuted. Renate Wohlwend of the Council's Parliamentary Assembly said that "to carry out this irrevocable act now would be a terrible mistake which could lead to a tragic injustice."

Spencer Lawton, the district attorney who secured Davis' conviction in 1991, however, said he was embarrassed for the judicial system that the execution has taken so long.

"What we have had is a manufactured appearance of doubt which has taken on the quality of legitimate doubt itself. And all of it is exquisitely unfair," said Lawton, who retired as Chatham County's head prosecutor in 2008. "The good news is we live in a civilized society where questions like this are decided based on fact in open and transparent courts of law, and not on street corners."

The latest motion filed in Butts County Court on Wednesday disputes testimony from a Georgia Bureau of Investigation expert at Davis' 1991 trial. It claims his testimony is no longer reliable that shell casings found at the scene of MacPhail's murder were linked to those found at the scene of another shooting for which Davis was convicted.

It also challenged testimony from Harriet Murray, an eyewitness who at trial identified Davis as the shooter. And it said evidence from another witness, Kevin McQueen, who said Davis confessed the killing to him is "patently false" and unreliable.

Davis' backers seek next step after execution (AP)

ATLANTA ? Minutes before he was put to death, Troy Davis asked his supporters to "continue to fight this fight" ? but will they, and how?

The Georgia inmate's case outraged hundreds of thousands of people around the world who found the evidence against him weak, and opponents of the death penalty hope their anger provokes a backlash against capital punishment. Some activists say a fitting legacy of the case would be laws that bar death sentences for those, like Davis, whose convictions are based on eyewitness testimony.

With Davis gone, however, the loose coalition of groups who pushed for his freedom may simply crumble. Much may depend not on the death penalty's most strident opponents, but on less politically active people who were drawn into the debate by Davis' two-decade struggle.

That includes Melvin Middleton, who believes capital punishment can be appropriate. After learning more details about Davis' case, he decided to show up at a downtown Atlanta rally opposing the execution.

"If you're going to take someone's life, you better be damn sure you are making the right decision," he said. "I don't know if he's guilty or not, but he's not proven guilty."

Davis was executed late Wednesday for the 1989 murder of off-duty Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail. Defense attorneys said several key witnesses disputed their testimony and other people claimed that another man confessed to the crime, but state and federal courts repeatedly upheld the conviction.

Davis maintained his innocence even as he was strapped to a gurney in the death chamber, where he told the MacPhail family to "look deeper into this case so that you really can finally see the truth."

Prosecutors and MacPhail's relatives say they have no doubt that justice was done, but among Davis' supporters, frustration runs deep.

"We did not want to lose Troy Davis as a casualty of this war, but I do think that his execution in a real sense will only add momentum to the movement of those of us who understand that the state really cannot be trusted with the ultimate punishment," said the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who spoke on Davis' behalf at a pardons board hearing this week.

Already, there are calls for lasting changes to the capital punishment system from Davis' advocates. Former President Jimmy Carter said he hopes "this tragedy will spur us as a nation toward the total rejection of capital punishment." Filmmaker Michael Moore posted a statement on his website calling for a boycott of Georgia.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who visited Davis on death row, said he will push for a national ban on capital punishment in cases that rely on eyewitness testimony. Maryland passed such a law in 2009.

"We must not only mourn what happened to Troy Davis but take strong measures so that it does not happen again," Sharpton said.

The Davis execution comes at a time when death penalty decisions are under increased scrutiny. The number of executions has dropped by half over the last decade, from 98 in 1999 to 46 in 2010. Illinois abolished capital punishment in March and several other states, including California and Connecticut, are expected to consider similar proposals next year.

More than 3,200 U.S. inmates were on death row at the beginning of 2011, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Public support for capital punishment remains strong, according to several polls. This month, a CBS/NY Times poll found that 60 percent of those surveyed supported the death penalty for people convicted of murder, with 27 percent opposed and 13 percent unsure. Gallup polls over the past two decades have shown slightly higher support, though Gallup found Americans to be closely divided when asked to choose between the death penalty and life imprisonment with no chance of parole.

Laura Moye of Amnesty International said she expects the Davis execution to be used to rally repeal movements across the country. She plans to meet with activists in Georgia over the next few days to plot out an attempt to banish capital punishment there.

"I'm meeting people who didn't really ever speak about the death penalty and now they are. They're hungry about the information and now they know," she said.

It's far from clear, however, whether the thousands who rallied and the hundreds of thousands who signed petitions on Davis' behalf will become any kind of political force. Organizers have announced few concrete steps, and legislative proposals have yet to take shape.

"The emotion of the moment passes and unfortunately so does the urgency to address these issues," said Bruce Barket, a New York criminal defense attorney who specializes in investigating wrongful convictions.

Spencer Lawton, the Savannah prosecutor who helped convict Davis, said the case shouldn't morph into a broader debate about capital punishment.

"Whether you are for or against the death penalty case is irrelevant in this case," he said. "You shouldn't be making Troy Davis into a vehicle for you to distort the truth, and that's what I think is going to happen. Whether you are for or against the death penalty, this has been a clear and fair and honest proceeding throughout. If you don't like the result, don't attack the proceeding falsely."

Ethics Newsline? ? News ? NASCAR Investigating Claims of Spin ...

Sep 19th, 2011 ? Posted in: News

In other sports-ethics news, an NFL coach says his linemen are ?100 percent ethical? in their blocking techniques; former soccer official loses his appeal of lifetime ban

VARIOUS DATELINES

Last week?s sports news included several stories involving ethics. Among them:

  • The NASCAR auto racing organization is investigating suspicions that a driver may have spun his car intentionally in order to help a teammate, reports USA Today. Driver Jeff Gordon complained that Paul Menard may have purposely spun near the end of a race, forcing everyone to hold their positions under a racetrack caution, and thus preserve the front-running status of a Menard teammate. Menard has denied the charge, reports USA Today, although NASCAR officials say they will investigate.
  • John Harbaugh, the coach of the Baltimore Ravens football team, last week said his linemen were ?100 percent ethical? and ?100 percent legal? in their blocking techniques and that the blocking scheme presents ?no danger whatsoever,? reports NBC Sports. The controversy evolved after a competing coach from the Pittsburgh Steelers said the Ravens were taking cheap shots at opponents? knees, an injury-prone area. While NBC Sports? Michael David Smith writes that ?Harbaugh is right that the blocks the Steelers were complaining about are legal,? he argues that ?claiming ?there is no danger whatsoever? seems to be taking it too far. Just because the blocks are allowed doesn?t mean they can?t injure someone.?
  • Mohamed bin Hammam, who was a member of the executive committee of FIFA, the world governing body of soccer, lost the appeal of his lifetime ban from the sport, ESPN reports. Hammam was banned after FIFA?s ethics committee determined that he was part of a conspiracy to bribe officials to cast votes for him in his candidacy for president of the organization.

What teachers really want to tell parents | Schoodoodle School ...

Ron Clark, author of ?The End of Molasses Classes: ?Getting our Kids Unstuck, and Disney?s American Teacher of the Year as well as Oprah Winfrey?s pick as her ?Phenomenal Man? recently wrote an article for CNN describing what he claims ?teachers really want to tell parents.?

Clark maintain, ?For starters, we are educators, not nannies. We are educated professionals who work with kids every day and often see your child in a different light than you do. If we give you advice, don?t fight it. Take it, and digest it in the same way you would consider advice from a doctor or lawyer. I have become used to some parents who just don?t want to hear anything negative about their child, but sometimes if you?re willing to take early warning advice to heart, it can help you head off an issue that could become much greater in the future.

Trust us. At times when I tell parents that their child has been a behavior problem, I can almost see the hairs rise on their backs. They are ready to fight and defend their child, and it is exhausting. One of my biggest pet peeves is when I tell a mom something her son did and she turns, looks at him and asks, ?Is that true?? Well, of course it?s true. I just told you. And please don?t ask whether a classmate can confirm what happened or whether another teacher might have been present. It only demeans teachers and weakens the partnership between teacher and parent.

Some parents will make excuses regardless of the situation, and they are raising children who will grow into adults who turn toward excuses and do not create a strong work ethic. If you don?t want your child to end up 25 and jobless, sitting on your couch eating potato chips, then stop making excuses for why they aren?t succeeding. Instead, focus on finding solutions.?

At a time when parental involvement is getting more and more legislative attention and funding, Clark?s message may resonate with teachers and school officials who are striving to implement effective parental involvement programs. ?The research supports it, teachers corroborate it, and parents generally accept the impact of their role in education. ?Yet, engaging parents in supporting learning at home still seems to be such a challenge for many.

Federal Title I legislation defines parent involvement as:? The participation of parents in regular, two-way, meaningful communication involving students? academic learning and other school activities. The involvement includes ensuring that parents play an integral role in assisting their child?s learning; that parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child?s education at school; that parents are full partners in their child?s education and are included, as appropriate, in decisionmaking and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child.

Resources like the New Path Learning ?Curriculum Mastery? Take-Home? Edition enables schools to easily extend time-on-task for an individual student at home as a homework assignment. It also involves the entire family in the learning process. Students will also benefit when parents see the kind of learning that the school expects for their child.

Maybe Clark is right about what teachers really want to tell parents. ?But I also believe that there are parents out there that want to help at home but are ill-equipped to do so. ?It is definitely a two-way street ? teachers need to communicate with parents and give them the tools they need to help at home, and parents need to support the education that happens at school and extend it beyond the classroom walls. ?Helping with homework, family game night, grocery shopping, cooking, and gardening are all perfect opportunities for parents to support education and incorporate learning experiences into healthy everyday family activities.
