Kosovo's LDK Asks for Full Report on Assassinations :: Balkan Insight

A leaked classified report by the EU's rule of law mission, EULEX, suggests that the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, pursued a strategy of killing its political opponents after the end of the war in Kosovo.

The LDK?s chairman, Isa Mustafa, said that he expects that EULEX will provide him with more details about the allegations contained in the document.

??We have not received anything yet officially from EULEX. But what we have seen in the press is extremely worrying. It would be good to see EULEX working on these cases and shed light on all those murders,? Mustafa told reporters in Pristina.

Last Thursday, Koha Ditore, a local newspaper, published parts of the classified report, which says that dozens of senior political figures and activists in the Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK, were killed after the end of the Kosovo conflict for political reasons.

The EULEX report highlights a breakdown of different crimes, murders, attempted murders and grievous assaults, mainly from 1999 to 2001. Some occurred as late as 2003.

But, the document does not identify the suspects but focuses on determining whether a pattern of selecting victims existed.

The LDK?s chairman says that EULEX ?owes to the families of the victims? an answer on how their loved ones lost their lives.

?This will also raise trust on the judiciary, on the prosecution, court and the state of Kosovo,? Mustafa said.

The LDK has in the past accused the former Secret Agency, SHIK, of being behind the assassinations of its members, but these claims were rejected by SHIK?s former boss, Kadri Veseli.

The SHIK emerged from the ranks of the KLA following the end of the war with Serbia in 1999, and then became the intelligence arm of the now ruling PDK.? SHIK claimed in 2008 that it had officially disbanded.

In 2009 Kosovo was shaken by the claims of a former self-styled SHIK agent, Nazim Bllaca, who said that the agency had targeted and killed members of the LDK.

One former Kosovo Liberation Army soldier, Fahredin Gashi, was sentenced to 18 years, following Bllaca?s testimony, while a second process was opened, known as ?Bllaca 2?, where six suspects were charged ? based on Bllaca?s testimony - with killing Salih Gashi, a veteran LDK activists.

Gashi who was shot dead on June 15, 1999, is also mentioned in the EULEX?s report, which has been adopted by the court as evidence in ?Bllaca 2? case.
